INTRODUCTION Guernsey is a part of the British crown empire within the English Channel along the coastal region of Normandy. The place is significantly divided into 10 Parishes. Today Guernsey stands as an independent island that was once separated from other peninsular districts in Continental Europe from about 6000 BC. The living history of Guernsey accounts to the Neolithic Man along with the primitive manmade structure in the European territory. LOCATION OF GUERNSEY Guernsey is nestled in the Western Europe, which is a wonderful island along the English Channel, lying towards the northwest part of the France.

    chardonnay socialist
A derogatory label for a person who pays lip service to left-wing views while enjoying an affluent lifestyle. It is modelled on the British term, champagne socialist , which has a similar meaning. The term chardonnay socialist appeared in 1989, not long after the grape variety Chardonnay became extremely popular with Australian wine drinkers. Back to Index of Australian Words

    chunder
Chunder probably comes from a once-popular cartoon character, 'Chunder Loo of Akim Foo', drawn by Norman Lindsay for a series of boot-polish advertisements in the early 1900s. It is possible that 'Chunder Loo' became rhyming slang for 'spew'.

    Flag adopted
    30 April 1985. See also:
    Description of the flag
William the Conqueror on the Bayeux tapestry. There is also a red ensign, with this cross in the fly.
Pascal Vagnat, 14 March 1996 The gold equal-armed cross overlaying the red cross was added to the flag in 1985 to distinguish it from England's. The gold cross also appears in the fly of the Guernsey Red Ensign. The Lieutenant-Governor's flag is as Jersey's except that Guernsey's arms are distinguished from those of Jersey (and England) by the addition of a golden sprig of leaves issuing from the top of the shield. Guernsey has two dependencies: Alderney and Sark. Alderney has its own States and Sark has a Court of Chief Pleas as its legislature. Both have representation on the States of Guernsey. Herm also has a degree of independence as a feudal tenancy leased from the States of Guernsey.
