health: The state of health in Guinea-Bissau is poor. The health care system aims at providing basic medical care for all citizens and is engaged in training health workers in every village. The goal is a health post in each section, a sectoral referral system, and a regional hospital within the reach of every citizen. ECONOMY: The economy is largely agricultural, with good prospects for forestry and fishery development. Rice is the main staple, and export crops include peanuts, cashews, palm products, timber, and seafood. Indigenous hardwoods are the predominant forestry export. US declassifies documents on freedom fighter Amlcar Cabral afrol News / A Semana , 7 June The US government has declassified documents on the death of Cape Verde's and Guinea-Bissau's celebrated freedom fighter, Amlcar Cabral, who was assassinated in 1973, thus not living to see the independence of the two Portuguese colonies. The historical documents show that Washington suspected Portugal to be involved in the killing, although leaning towards an ethnic conflict between the freedom fighters. Less than a month after the assassination of the leader of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), Amlcar Cabral, in 1973, the United States concluded that then-colonial power Portugal was not directly involved in his death, according to official documents made public Monday in Washington. Even so, the US State Department's Information and Investigation Services also concluded that "Lisbon's complicity" in the assassination of the leader of the struggle for Cape Verde's and Guinea-Bissau's independence "cannot be ruled out."
According to journalist Jos Pestana of Portuguese news agency Lusa, the documents now made public include telegrams, minutes from high-level US government meetings and policy proposals for Washington in the face of the deterioration of the military situation in Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique, both of which at the time were immersed in wars between Portugal and their respective independence movements.

Guinea-Bissau, a neighbor of Senegal and Guinea in West Africa, on the Atlantic coast, is about half the size of South Carolina. The country is a low-lying coastal region of swamps, rain forests, and mangrove-covered wetlands, with about 25 islands off the coast. The Bijagos archipelago extends 30 mi (48 km) out to sea. The rivers of Guinea and the islands of Cape Verde were among the first areas in Africa explored by the Portuguese, notably Nuno Tristo, in the 15th century. Portugal claimed Portuguese Guinea in 1446, but few trading posts were established before 1600. In 1630, a "captaincy-general" of Portuguese Guinea was established to administer the territory. With the cooperation of some local tribes, the Portuguese entered the slave trade and exported large numbers of Africans to the Western Hemisphere via the Cape Verde Islands. Cacheu became one of the major slave centers, and a small fort still stands in the town. The slave trade declined in the 19th century, and Bissau, originally founded as a military and slave-trading center in 1765, grew to become the major commercial center. Portuguese conquest and consolidation of the interior did not begin until the latter half of the 19th century. Portugal lost part of Guinea to French West Africa, including the center of earlier Portuguese commercial interest, the Casamance River region. A dispute with Britain over the island of Bolama was settled in Portugal's favor with the involvement of U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant.

Guinea-Bissau launches Bolama as world heritage site afrol News , 8 February The government of Guinea-Bissau has decided to launch Bolama as a world heritage site to the UN's culture agency UNESCO. Bolama, which was the first capital of the colonial administration of Portuguese Guinea, is located close to the famous Bijagos Islands, already a biosphere reserve. According to government sources in Guinea-Bissau, the project to have Bolama included in UNESCO's prestigious World Heritage list will be launched when the Director-General of that UN agency, Koichiro Matsuura, returns to the country in April. A larger process, mostly referring to Guinea-Bissau's ability to manage the site, will than decide whether Bolama can be put on the list.
Mr Matsuura only was in Guinea-Bissau in January this year and held talks with Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Jnior over the status of Bolama and the Bijagos biosphere reserve. The two on 24 January inaugurated an exposition on Guinea-Bissau's natural and cultural heritage in Bissau, the current capital.

Imagine not being able to recognize your husband, your mother, your co-workers. For author Heather Sellers, that's everyday life: She suffers from an inability to recognize faces. In her new memoir, Sellers writes about coming to terms with the disorder, but not until she was in her 30s.
