Welcome to my web page all about these cute little animals commonly known as guinea pigs. This page is just an introduction to why I think that guinea pigs are the ideal family pet. Myself and my family have owned numerous pets. These being 2 dogs, 2 Hamsters,2 Mice, 2 Lovebirds, 1 Gerbil, 2 Chipmunks (that gave birth each year at Easter),Fish - both tropical and coldwater, 3 Rabbits and at the last count we had owned at least 10 Guinea Pigs! Having recently been blessed with one giving birth to 3 babies, I've just had to keep one of them! Tonto, and he's very loud at squeaking when he wants either food or a cuddle. The most interesting pets were the chipmunks as they were never still, and right up to 'Wilma' giving birth, she was racing round the cage and flipping upside down without hesitation. She would then give birth to 7 babies! All that to one side, our favourite pets are the guinea pigs. We currently have 3 in a purpose built run outside. Blondie who gave birth to the 3 babies, Pikachu, owned and named by our son Daniel and Smudge, owned by my friend Jenny. Daniel has the father in his bedroom and he's called Scooby. Tonto is kept inside the house too because I can't resist cuddling him.

"Fluffy" and "Baby" are two guinea pigs that became our pet in May 2005. They are extremely adorable! We love them and doted on them. Guinea pigs make good pets because they can be easily tamed - they have never bitten us. Guinea pigs are tailess rodents, also known as CAVY (Cavia porcellus). They originated from the savannahs of northern South America. Charlie is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - he came to us in March 2006.

    Pet Adoption (Guinea Pigs Adoption)
Our 2 guinea pigs are ready for adoption (whenever we can find a good family who wants to have them as pets). There is no hurry - we hope that who ever adopts them meet our criteria:
    • Very small kids who may mishandle them (falls can be fatal for the GP, and when tripped on or sat upon, these GPs will have little chance of 'making it alive'.
Time for the GPs they need to be played with, stroke, fed, bathed, and their areas kept clean. A safe place - open garden may be good when there is supervision but certainly not advisable when left out without shelter (they can escape and become prey to birds).

    Fun with Guinea Pigs
By sarajean on 7/12/09 7:56pm Add Comment If your young child has been begging for a dog or a cat, why not start out with a guinea pig? It’s furry and loveable enough to be a better companion than fish, yet easier to care for—and often gentler—than dogs and cats . Then, once he or she has a knack for caring for the little guy, a graduation to a bigger pet could be granted. Just remember that as the parent, you will continue to be the primary caregiver—which means you’ve got to supervise your child in caring for his or her new friend. If your child pleads for two guinea pigs, it may not be a bad idea, since they are happiest when they’re with other guinea pigs. Your new pet will need a place to stay. The Humane Society of the United States recommends that guinea pigs have a home “at least 18 inches wide, 14 inches tall and 25 inches deep.” Remember that the larger the home your guinea pig has, the more likely he’s going to be active—and more fun for your family. Also, note that guinea pigs have very sensitive feet, so the same wire-floor cages that may work for other animals won’t be appropriate for your pet. Aquariums are also a poor choice of home, as they don’t allow enough ventilation for your pet. He’ll also need plenty of lining for his floor, as well as some fun things like gnawing toys, hay and a little home to hide out and nest in. And like all pocket pets, he’ll need constant fresh, clean water. Be sure to keep all of his things nice and clean by scrubbing the cage regularly and replacing old bedding with new frequently.

    Guinea Pig Zoonoses
    July 13, 2009 by admin
Filed under Guinea Pig Healthcare 1 Comment The scenario was one sick child confined to bed after an operation who had three of my guinea pigs snuggled around her. I sat one side of the bed while her mother was on the other. In the main, what guinea pigs get in the way of bugs and ooh nasties, are species specific. In other words the bug that likes them are not particularly interested in humans. However there is one that humans can and do pick up and that is fungal. There are many strains of this and several of them are common to both human and guinea pigs. Children are particularly susceptible to picking them up and I always emphasise this whenever I am asked for advice if a family guinea pig has some kind of skin problem. The good news, is that it is more of a minor irritation to a human being than a serious health threat. They are easily treated with creams or powders and if they have become systemic with the Griseofulvin. Tags: Guinea Pig Zoonoses

It is hard for owners - and pet store employees to tell young male guinea pigs from young female guinea pigs. So the two you thought were the same sex may not have been. Also, guinea pigs are unique in the early age at which they can become pregnant. So many were already pregnant when you obtained them. Guinea pig pregnancies can last from 59 - 72 days. But the average pregnancy is 63 - 68 days. Litter size is usually 1 - 6 babies. The average size is 3. Will My Pet Have Problems?

    Guinea Pig Health Care
    GUINEA PIGS AS PETS

Guinea pigs (or Cavies as they are also known) make wonderful pets. They are best kept in pairs as one guinea pig gets very lonely. They are very vocal animals and need a companion to talk to. It is best to have two sisters or two brothers if they are unneutered, however we neuter all our animals therefore we can pair male and female together and we believe that is the perfect pairing. If you are going to buy your animal from a pet shop, (which we do not recommend as often the sales assistants know very little if anything at all about the animals) do make sure that you take your animals along to the Vets to have a health check and to have the gender of the animals confirmed. DO NOT under any circumstances house a guinea pig with a rabbit. The two will almost certainly get along for the first few months but when the rabbit reaches sexual maturity it will molest the guinea pig, resulting in injury and even death. Another factor to consider is that rabbits and guinea pigs require different diets.
