TAB H Friendly-fire Incidents The "100 hour" Desert Storm ground campaign illustrated the ferocity and high tempo of modern warfare. For several days, almost one million Coalition combatants and over ten thousand armored vehicles engaged in intense and sustained combat operations around the clock, often in rainy weather. Unlike previous conflicts where the front lines remained relatively fixed, Operation Desert Storm was characterized by a dynamic, often confused battlefield where individual combat vehicle crews and units, caught up in the rapid advance punctuated by pitched skirmishes and battles, sometimes lost their "situational awareness" of where they were and where the enemy and friendly forces were. Figure H-1. An M2 Bradley passes another Bradley destroyed by friendly fire On the modern battlefield, success tends to favor the side that can see, engage, and neutralize the enemy first. US combat vehicles enjoyed important technological advantages over Iraq's older, mostly Russian-designed armored vehicles. Superior sighting and sensor equipment almost invariably allowed US crewmen to see and engage the Iraqi forces first, especially during night combat or in bad weather. US cannon systems were stabilized, so they could fire accurately while on the move. US forces could select, load, and fire munitions far more rapidly than their Iraqi counterparts. Finally, the use of depleted uranium rounds allowed US tanks to engage the enemy from extended ranges and with unprecedented lethal effect. While Iraqi Republican Guard T-72 tanks Saddam's most formidable armored threat boasted a 125mm cannon with a maximum effective range of 1,800 meters, US M1A1 tanks routinely scored kills at twice that distance.

WELCOME TO CARNEY'S ARMY DEFENSE PAGE On this page you will get to know more about the United States' Army Defense. From the History of our Army to its present day power, todays Army is Americas best defense against world power. So onword to.......... Special Forces Recruiting Gulf War-History An Infantry Poem ... JOBS IN THE ARMY AND YOU ITS EITHER YOUR INFANTRY OR INFANTRY SUPPORT In todays world a good army means good security and power, without a strong Infantry and a good back-up the United States has absolutly no kind of military strength. Thats why it's of great importance to keep the army strong and have as many people involved as possible. It should be every male and females duty as an American to serve at least two years in the army or another part of the Armed Forces. Throughout the years America has been involved in wars, from the Civil War and even before that, to the present day. Many Americans have paid the price for our freedom, for us to be living right now. They paid with their lives, blood and suffering. If it wasn't for the people before us, who gave up their freedom so that we can have ours, we wouldn't be here or we would be slaves to another country. Thats why every person should give a little back, just show some thanks for what was given unselfishly to all, and help the ones after us. There are so many jobs in the army, over 200, i'm sure theres one for you. Just two years of your life is all thats asked, people gave their whole life so the least you could give is two years of yours. You could either be INFANTRY or INFANTRY SUPPORT.

The Gulf War: History Repeated?
The satellite photo above shows the location of the ancient city of Ur of the Chaldees, leading city of Mesopotamia at 2500 BC, and home of the biblical Abraham. The key to the biblical flood is in the behavior of the three rivers shown. The Iraq military airfield of Talil, which was devasted by the allies in the war, is next to the ancient city. It is ironical that the February 25, 1992 ground attack in the Gulf War was fought in and around this same site of ancient struggle between the Sumerians and the Elamites. A military map of the war, covering the same area as the photo above, is shown below.

CW2 David L. Snook On first coming to power, Hussein was strongly anti-Western and anti-Israeli. He moderated his policies somewhat during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) but resumed his strident rhetoric almost as soon as the war was over. Militarily, the Iran-Iraq War was indecisive, but it did elevate Saddam Hussein to a position of leadership in the Arab World. He saw himself as the leader destined to reunite the Arab people, by force if necessary, and lead them to a new period of glory. He also hoped to assume control over the oil reserves of the Middle East and drive the Israelis out of the region. He did not disband his million-man army after the war with Iran, but, instead, began to spend billions on new weapons (including Soviet Scud missiles, T-72 tanks and MiG-29 jet fighters). He also pushed ahead with Iraqi research and development of chemical and nuclear weapons. On July 17, 1990, in a bitter and threatening speech, Hussein accused Kuwait of building military installations on Iraqi territory, of stealing billions of dollars worth of oil from the Iraqi portion of the Rumaila oil field that overlaps a section of their common border, and of overproducing oil, thus driving world prices down. He also began massing troops along the Kuwaiti border. th province. He also began massing troops along the border with Saudi Arabia.

Iraqi president Saddam Hussein declared that the invasion was a response to overproduction of oil and illegally pumping for more than $2 billion in oil from a contested reserve that lay beneath both countries. Iraq also demanded Kuwait cancel the debt Iraq owed from the Iran-Iraq War. The UN Security Council called for Iraq to withdraw and subsequently embargoed most trade with Iraq. On Aug. 7, U.S. troops moved into Saudi Arabia to protect Saudi oil reserves. On Nov. 29, the UN set Jan. 15, 1991, as the deadline for the withdrawal of hostile forces from seized territory. When Saddam Hussein refused to comply, Operation Desert Storm was launched on Jan. 18, 1991, under the leadership of U.S. Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf.
