The nostalgia this cookbook brings to Guyanese abroad features a smorgasboard of meals such as Cantonese Fried Rice, Curried Chicken, Metemgee, Garlic pork, Pepperpot, and Shepherds Pie. The only thing that sets this cookbook apart from any cookbook is the colorful cultural presentation of Guyana, its people, its arts and rituals.
"Like New York, Guyana has many ethnic types, brought together under British rulership. Our foods come from the backgrounds of Amerindians, Africans, Indians, Portuguese, Chinese, and of course the British. We've been truly blessed in our blended society," says Xlibris Publisher author Deborah Barocas.

Identification. Location and Geography. Guyana is on the northeastern shoulder of South America, bounded on the north by the Atlantic Ocean, on the east by Suriname, on the northwest by Venezuela, and on the south and southwest by Brazil. The capital city is Georgetown. In an area of 83,000 square miles (212,000 square kilometers), there are three regions: the narrow coastal belt of rich alluvium; the densely forested, hilly sand and clay belt; and the Rupununi grasslands between the rain forests and the frontier with Brazil. Over 90 percent of the population lives on the coastal belt, which is below sea level. The Dutch, using African slaves in the eighteenth century, made this area habitable. Every square mile of cultivated land has forty-nine miles of drainage canals and ditches and sixteen miles of high-level waterways. Demography.

Georgetown City Hall altrendo images / Getty Images zSB(3,3) About Georgetown: Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, is almost fairy tale in appearance, thanks to the tree-lined streets ( photo ) and avenues and the quaint Dutch colonial and Victorian architecture stemming from its days as Dutch and English colonies. Georgetown lies below the high-tide level, protected by a seawall ( photo ) with a series of canals crisscrossing the city. When rains are heavy, flooding, as occurred in early 2005, is a risk. Located on the mouth of the Demerara River fronting the Atlantic Ocean, Georgetown, originally called Stabroek, was an ideal location for European presence in the Caribbean. Orient yourself with this map of Guyana . Rich in timber, bauxite, gold and diamonds, the land supported sugar cane plantations and enriched the colonial governments. The Spanish, Dutch, French and English all had their eyes on this region and for years each struggled to possess it.

CULTURE Until its independence, Guyana was tied culturally more closely to Suriname and French Guiana than to the rest of South America. Guyana was settled by East Indians, who still speak Urdu, Hindi, and Tamil dialects; black Africans; and a few Europeans, mostly from Britain. These various ethnic strains have remained fairly distinct, and today each group has its own style of life and culture, although the ties of nationhood tend to bind them together. Postindependence Guyanese culture still bears the imprint of its colonial heritage. Guyanese were taught to respect and covet European values during the colonial era, and this has not changed despite government exhortation. Yet ethnic identity continues to be important, with daily life centring around ethnic and family groups; the mother- and grandmother-dominated family among blacks differs from the father-oriented East Indian family. Men of both groups often commute long distances to work along the coastal highway. Daily dress normally does not distinguish one group from another. Amerindian culture, which remains uninfluenced by national politics, is recognized as an important element in Guyanese museum displays and as an inspiration in local music and painting. Cultural institutions are concentrated in Georgetown, including the Guyana Museum, which includes the Guyana Zoo, with its impressive collection of animals from northern South America. Guyanese writers have made noteworthy contributions to literature; the works of Wilson Harris, A.J. Seymour, and Walter Rodney are among the foremost.

Cultural Achievements Guyana's cultural expression reflects its separate ethnic contributions and has a regional rather than a universal orientation. A number of its best-known novelists have lived abroad, including Edgar Mittelholzer, The Kwayana Family Trilogy , which focuses on one family through 350 years of Guyana's history; Christopher Nicole, Ratoon ; Jan Carew, Black Midas ; Roy Heath, Orealla; and E.R. Braithwaite, To Sir With Love , which details his experiences as a black high school teacher in a white London slum. His work was praised for its hopeful view of difficult race relations and became the subject of a major motion picture. Another prominent, avant-garde writer is Wilson Harris, The Palace and the Peacock . Additionally, Churamanie Bissundyal, a writer is also becoming better known in writing circles the world over. Among the country's outstanding poets are Martin Carter, Poems of Resistance, and A.J. Seymour, who wrote I Was Born in Georgetown . Denis Williams has gained fame as a painter, novelist, curator, and anthropologist. Philip Moore is well known for his wood sculptures, which show African influence. Art takes many forms in Guyana, but its dominant themes are the Amerindians, the ethnic diversity of the population and the physical beauties of Guyana. The works of Stanley Greaves, Ronald Savory, Philip Moore and the late Aubrey Williams have been much in demand in the last two decades. Savory's works in particular have brought the hard-to-reach interior within view of urban dwellers.
