Guyana : Culture
The composition of Guyanese society is a reflection of the nation's colonial past. The colony was created by Dutch and British planters who grew sugarcane using the labor of slaves and indentured workers. Ignoring the nation's large interior, the planters constructed dikes and dams that transformed the coast into an arable plain. With the exception of the indigenous Amerindians and a few Europeans, the entire population consisted of imported plantation workers or their descendants. Although the culture of independent Guyana has become more truly national, the Guyanese people remain separated by ethnic mistrust. The Guyanese elite that has emerged to replace the colonial administration faces the enormous challenge of satisfying the aspirations of the people concerning economic development and educational opportunity. In the early half of the 17th century, the Dutch established a colony along the Essequibo River, and then even the English and French established colonies. Then the Treaty of Breda was signed in 1667, and this effectively gave the Dutch control of all the colonies established by the English. More..

Guyana is located in the northern part of South America. The capital city is Georgetown, which is also the city where most of the people live.
The country is made up of 51 percent East Indians, 43 percent Afro-Guyanese, 4 percent Amerindians and Europeans, Chinese and Americans form 2 percent of the population.Taking into consideration the diverse population, the Guyana culture is also very diverse. However, Guyana culture has been influenced greatly by the Europeans, who first established a settlement here in 1615. In addition, the culture has also been influenced by the Dutch who established colonies and settlements in Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice. Thereafter, the Dutch established a plantation near a riverside and started trade links with the Indians. Most of the East Indians that live in Guyana are Hindus, but there are some who also follow the Muslim faith. The Afro-Guyanese population is predominantly Christian, but some are also Muslims, Methodists and Seven Day Adventists. The original people of Guyana were Arawak Indians, and the Carib Indians came later. The Caribs either killed the Arawak Indians or managed to drive them away from their land to the Antilles, and the Greater and Lesser Islands.

Think about the words you would use to describe yourself. Do you consider yourself kind and friendly? Now think about why you have those traits. Is it because of how you were raised, where you live, how much money your parents make, or a combination of everything? Can some of it be because of your race or religion? There was a man who thought a lot about those questions. This man was Walter Rodney. He was born poor in Guyana, but grew to be a very powerful man. So powerful, in fact, that his government had him killed.

Guyana, (Co-operative Republic of Guyana) is located on the northern seacoast of South America. Guyana, formerly British Guiana, is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. It is bounded on the north by the Atlantic Ocean, on the east by Suriname, on the south by Brazil, and on the west by Brazil and Venezuela. The country achieved independence on May 26, 1966. Guyana has an area of 214,969 sq km (83,000 sq mi); its coastline is about 435 km (about 270 mi) long. Guyana can be divided into four major geographical regions. A belt of alluvial soil, varying in width from about 8 to 65 km (about 5 to 40 mi) and mostly below sea level, extends along the coast and is protected by a system of dams
and dikes. Guyana achieved independence in May 1966, and became a republic on February 23, 1970the anniversary of the Cuffy slave rebellion. From December 1964 until his death in August 1985, Forbes Burnham ruled Guyana in an increasingly autocratic manner, first as prime minister and later, after the adoption of a new constitution in 1980, as executive president. During that time- frame, elections were viewed in Guyana and abroad as fraudulent. Human rights and civil liberties were suppressed, and two major political assassinations occurred: the Jesuit Priest and journalist Bernard Darke in July 1979, and the distinguished historian and WPA Party leader Walter Rodney in June 1980. Agents of President Burnham are widely believed to have been responsible for both deaths.
