Fort Ter Hoog (1596) was established at the Cuyuni, Essequibo and Mazaruni rivers. Other trading posts that were established by the Dutch include fort Kyk-overal in 1616 (by Adrian Groenwen); and Abraham Von Pere in colony of Berbice. In 1740 the governor of Essequibo Laurens Storm Gravesande founded the county of Demerara. HISTORY
Guyana (full name is Co-operative Republic of Guyana) is a tropical country situated on the northern coast of South America.
It is the only country in South America where English is the official language. It is bordered by Venezuela on the west, Suriname on the east, Brazil on the south and the Atlantic Ocean on the north. Guyana has an area of 214,969 sq km (83,000 sq mi), about the size of Great Britain.
The name Guyana is an Amerindian word meaning Land Of Many Waters.
We are known as the country of Six People- Africans, Amerindians , Chinese, East Indians, Europeans and Portugese. Guyana is notably famous for Kaieteur Falls, which is situated on the Potaro River, where that river falls off the Pakaraima Plateau. Kaieteur is one of the highest waterfalls in the world, being nearly five times as high as the Niagara Falls in North America. Our Falls have a clear drop of 741 feet, then a further drop of 81 feet over the great rocks at the bottom. Kaieteur was discovered in 1870 by C. Barrington Brown, who also discovered Orinduik and Kuribrong Falls. The name Kaieteur is an Amerindian word, and the falls should properly be called Kai-Tuk. Georgetown being the chief port and capital is situated on the right bank of the Demerara River estuary. In Georgetown, familiar landmarks include the lively Stabroek Market, the sea-wall and the Anglican cathedral of St George, the tallest wooden building in the world.

Identification. Location and Geography. Guyana is on the northeastern shoulder of South America, bounded on the north by the Atlantic Ocean, on the east by Suriname, on the northwest by Venezuela, and on the south and southwest by Brazil. The capital city is Georgetown. In an area of 83,000 square miles (212,000 square kilometers), there are three regions: the narrow coastal belt of rich alluvium; the densely forested, hilly sand and clay belt; and the Rupununi grasslands between the rain forests and the frontier with Brazil. Over 90 percent of the population lives on the coastal belt, which is below sea level. The Dutch, using African slaves in the eighteenth century, made this area habitable. Every square mile of cultivated land has forty-nine miles of drainage canals and ditches and sixteen miles of high-level waterways. Demography.

Information will be added as it becomes available and as time permits. Pre-European Colonization The area of the Guianas, bounded by the rivers of the Orinoco, Amazon, Rio Negro and the Atlantic Ocean, is believed to have been settled before 900 AD by Warrau Indians, and later by the Arawak and Carib tribes. However, there is no evidence from these times of a very advanced civilization. Christopher Columbus sailed off the Guianas in 1489 and the 1595 voyage of Sir Walter Raleigh to the New World led to subsequent accounts of El Dorado , the city of gold, which is beleived to be in or around what is now Guyana.

Around 1200 - The Amerindians migrate to, and inhabit, South America (see map ). The legend of the Empire of Eldorado is born. Guyana shown on map of South America - The earliest account of the territory of Guiana is made in a despatch to the Royal Council of Spain in which the Governor of Trinidad, Antonio de Berreo, describes his journey down the Oronoco and his attempt to explore Guiana. - Sir Robert Dudley makes enquiries about the rumoured Empire of El Dorado when his ship puts into Trinidad. A small boat is sent to investigate and its crew return to report that the natives (Amerindians) had told them of gold mines so rich that that the people of the country powdered themselves with gold dust. "And farre beyond them", they said,"a great towne called El Dorado with many more things". - The Dutch make their first trip to Guiana.

    THE EARLY YEARS
The first humans to reach Guyana belonged to the group of peoples that crossed into North America from Asia perhaps as much as 35,000 years ago. These first inhabitants were nomads who slowly spread south into Central America and South America. Although great civilizations later arose in the Americas, the structure of Amerindian society in the Guianas remained relatively simple. At the time of Christopher Columbus's voyages, Guyana's inhabitants were divided into two groups, the Arawak along the coast and the Carib in the interior. One of the legacies of the indigenous peoples was the word Guiana, often used to describe the region encompassing modern Guyana as well as Suriname (former Dutch Guiana) and French Guiana. The word, which means ""land of waters,"" is highly appropriate, considering the area's multitude of rivers and streams. Enter your search terms Submit search form Web countrystudies.us
