Guyana Guyana History
Originally a Dutch colony in the 17th century, by 1815 Guyana had become a British possession. The abolition of slavery led to black settlement of urban areas and the importation of indentured servants from India to work the sugar plantations. This ethnocultural divide has persisted and has led to turbulent politics. Guyana achieved independence from the UK in 1966, and since then it has been ruled mostly by socialist-oriented governments. In 1992, Cheddi JAGAN was elected president in what is considered the country's first free and fair election since independence. After his death five years later, his wife, Janet JAGAN, became president but resigned in 1999 due to poor health. Her successor, Bharrat JAGDEO, was reelected in 2001 and again in 2006. Guyana Coins British Guiana's first gold coins were issued in 1976 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of its independence in 1966.. We occasionally have a small selection of Guyana gold coins in stock. We show the specifications here of the most frequently held coins, followed by a list of coins most recently available.

Guyana history is very fascinating; it has been fought over by many parties and countries, all of which wanted to put their stamp on Guyana. Guyana is not an island, like many other Caribbean places, but is in fact part of South America. It lies along the top of the country on the North Coast. So what tale does Guyana's story have to reveal? This may be a familiar story if you know much about the history of other Caribbean islands but Guyana history begins with the tribes of America; notably the Arawak tribes. In yet another similar twist, the Arawak tribe was displaced by a much more forceful and advancing Carib tribe.
      European Colonization and Slavery
Christopher Columbus discovered the country in his voyage of 1498, yet he failed to claim it for the Spanish. The Dutch managed to be the first to seize the country and take control before the British made a move in the 18th century, painting the Guyana history with the English language and membership to the British Empire.

Guyana : History
Guyana achieved independence in May 1966, and became a republic on February 23, 1970the anniversary of the Cuffy slave rebellion. From December 1964 until his death in August 1985, Forbes Burnham ruled Guyana in an increasingly autocratic manner, first as prime minister and later, after the adoption of a new constitution in 1980, as executive president. During that timeframe, elections were viewed in Guyana and abroad as fraudulent. Human rights and civil liberties were suppressed, and two major political assassinations occurred: the Jesuit Priest and journalist Bernard Darke in July 1979, and the distinguished historian and WPA Party leader Walter Rodney in June 1980. Agents of President Burnham are widely believed to have been responsible for both deaths. Sources:

History
Before the arrival of European settlers, the indigenous Warrau tribe controlled the territory of Guyana. In the early 17th cent. the Dutch established settlements about the Essequibo River, and England and France also founded colonies in the Guiana region. By the Treaty of Breda (1667) the Dutch gained all the English colonies in Guiana. Possessions continued to change hands in the late 18th and early 19th cent. until the Congress of Vienna (1815) awarded the settlements of Berbice, Demerara, and Essequibo to Great Britain; they were united as British Guiana in 1831. Slavery was abolished in 1834. In 1879 gold was discovered, thus speeding British expansion toward the Orinoco delta and resulting in the Venezuela Boundary Dispute After World War II significant progress toward self-government was made. Under the 1952 constitution, elections were won (1953) by the PPP, headed by Cheddi

Guyana : History
More than twenty five years after gaining freedom, Guyana retained the clear imprint of its colonial past. Sighted by Columbus during his third voyage, the area was virtually ignored by later Spanish explorers and conquistadors. The first European settlers were the Dutch, who accomplished a trading post in 1616. The native Carib and Awarak peoples were killed by disease or conflict over the land or forced into the interior. The Dutch, realizing the agricultural potential of the swampy coast, drained the land with a network of dikes and canals. In the 1700s, the three Dutch colonies in present-day Guyana grew and prospered with plantation economies based on sugarcane and slave labor. Increasing number of British settlers were also drawn to the area in the second half of the eighteenth century. Dutch rule ended in 1814 when the colonies were awarded to Britain following the Napoleonic wars. Ideology played a large part in the newly independent nation's approach to economic development. The initial selection of a Marxist-Leninist economic system was motivated by a desire to break with the capitalist past. But authoritarian rule by one dominant political personality and continued ethnic tension undermined the crafting of a coherent or pragmatic development strategy. Independent Guyana's history under its first prime minister, Forbes Burnham, is one of political confrontation and long economic decline. Desmond Hoyte's tenure appeared to represent a departure from the economic and authoritarian policies of his predecessor, but in 1991 it was unclear if the historical patterns of personal political dominance and ethnic tension could be changed.

Guyana History
An indigenous tribe known as Warrau had control over Guyana long before the European settlers came.
In the early half of the 17th century, the Dutch established a colony along the Essequibo River, and then even the English and French established colonies. Then the Treaty of Breda was signed in 1667, and this effectively gave the Dutch control of all the colonies established by the English. However, the control of Guyana kept changing hands right until the early part of the 19th century. Then in 1815, the Congress of Vienna handed over the colonies of Berbice, Demerara and Essequibo to Great Britain. In 1831, the colonies were united to form the British Guyana. In 1834, slavery was abolished from the country. When gold was found in the region in 1879, the British were quick to expand their presence right until Orinoco Delta. This is what led to the Venezuela boundary dispute.
