Spanish explorers first charted the territory that is now Guyana in 1499. In the 1620s the Dutch established a permanent and successful colony on an island in the Essequibo River. The English and French also founded settlements on the South American coast during the 1600s. All three nations claimed rights in the whole region extending from the Orinoco River to the Amazon River. deeper links

Later on it was Dutch people who settled in the region of Guyana around Essequibo River. England and France also influenced the region of Guinea. Beginning of 17 century till early 19 century, the possessions changed hands frequently till British Guinea was established in 1831. In 1834 there was abolishment of slavery and gold discovery in 1879. This paved the way for British expansion leading to Venezuela boundary dispute. Noticeable progress occurred after World War II and Cheddi Jagan became the leader of PPP in 1953 after winning the elections and formed the Government. PPP split and Burnham formed PNC. There were many ups and downs with much of political unrest. US Central Intelligence Agency was said to be involved. It is thought to be at initiative of Kennedy administration. Burnham became Head of coalition Government in 1964.The coalition was formed by PNC and UF. There were communal riots in 1960s, but country stabilized in 1970s.

Generally, the phrase "race relations" refers to how well people of different races agree or disagree within a society. As most countries throughout the world have different races in their populations, race relations are an important issue in most nations. How are race relations in your country? Do people of different races get along? This idea of race relations is explained pretty easily by the history of Guyana. Guyana is a country in northern South America, along the Caribbean coast. Throughout its history, people from all over the world have come to live there. These people come from dramatically different backgrounds: Native American, European, African and Indian. Guyana's history is a story of how those groups have lived together, sometimes agreeing, and sometimes disagreeing violently.

Early History
The native peoples of the South American continent were first visited by the Spanish in their global quest for gold and riches. The Spanish were searching in Guiana when the Englishman Sir Walter Raleigh visited the country in 1595. Raleiegh wrote a travelogue of his visit entitled "The Discovery of Guiana". The word "discover", in this case means his own personal discovery and not that he was the first European to discover Guiana.. Having found no riches, the Spanish left the territory for others to explore. In the ensuing years, the rule of the territory would bounce between the Dutch, French, and English. Many online accounts of the earliest years can be found online, as well as many copies of Raleigh's travelogue account of his visit to this area. How did the territory currently referred to as "Guyana" get it's name?
