Gymnastics was the first "modern era" VHSL sponsored girls sport. From 1969 until 1973, VHSL gymnasts competed for individual titles in Floor Exercise, Balance Beam, Uneven Parallel Bars, Vault, Tumbling (discontinued as an event in 1973), and All-Around events. In 1974, team competition was added, with Midlothian claiming the AAA championship and Varina winning the first of four "unclassified" titles (1974-77). Today, Group AAA continues to sponsor team championships, while gymnasts from all groups compete for individual titles in an "open" meet. Lake Braddock High School of Burke has won a VHSL record nine team championships, five in a row from 1995-99. First Colonial's Kara Wright owns the VHSL record for individual titles with 11 including four All-Around titles from 2003-06. VHSL conducted boys gymnastics championships from 1963-1984.

History of the Sport of Gymnastics
Gymanstics, as an activity sport, has been around for over 2000 years but as an competitive sport it is a little more than 100 years old. Mass and individual exhibitions were conducted by various clubs and ethnic groups such as the Turvereins and Sok ols. While it was slow-growing in the club area, it was fast-growing sport in the Turvereins and Sokols. In 1830s, the sport of gymnastics was introduced to United States and its school systems by such immigrants as Charles Beck, Charles Follen and Franci s Lieber. In 1881 the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) was formed, later was renamed to Bureau of the European Gymnastics Federation. This organization pioneered the international competition. The Amature Athletic Union (AAU) was formed in United Sta tes in 1883. Along with other amature spotts in United States, this organization took over the control of the gymnastics in U.S. Various "championships" started to develop by various clubs and organizations at about the same time during 1880s. The first large-scale competition was the 1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece. There Germany have been the dominant team by almost sweeping every medal. Five countries have participapted in this event. Men's competitions included horizontal bar, parall el bars, pommel horse, rings, and vault.

Gymnastics 1: Ancient Gymnastics
Gymnastics, in the form of acrobatics, calisthenics, and disciplined exercise, has been around since ancient times. Acrobats entertained Egyptian nobility about 7,000 years ago and, judging by ancient frescoes, acrobats vaulted over the backs of bulls on the island of Crete when the Minoan civilization flourished, beginning about 2,700 BC. The name of the sport comes from gymnos , the Greek word for naked. In ancient Greece, male athletes trained and competed in the nude. The gymnasium, originally an area for physical training, came to be a school for training both the mind and the body. There were three types of teachers in a gymnasium: Grammatistes, who taught the three Rs; Kitharistes, who taught music; and paidotribes, who were physical fitness teachers. Physical training took place in the palestra, a square, walled, open-air area equipped with changing rooms and baths. Activities included running, jumping, weightlifting, throwing, wrestling, and swimming, all classified as gymnastics. Evidently, most exercises were conducted to music, as in the floor exercise of modern artistic gymnastics. Among the ancient Greeks, gymnastics probably reached a peak in Sparta. With their emphasis on the military, the Spartans prized exercises that could improve not only physical fitness but also discipline. In Athens and most other city-states, only boys received a formal education and took part in gymnastics. But Sparta required that both sexes be physically fit. Women needed strong bodies so they could bear strong, healthy children.

History The History of the Panthers Gymnastics Club
In 1966, the Panthers started in the Norwood-St.Boniface area of Winnipeg under the guidance of Mrs.Ingrid Pichette. There were 17 members. They used gymnasiums and equipment provided by the St.Boniface-St.Vital Parks Board. At that time they were named the Purple Panthers.
By 1979, the club had grown and it became obvious that to develop further, they needed a permanent facility. Warehouse space was found, rented and transformed into a gymnasium.
In 1980, a contest was held to find a logo for the club. Debbie McDowell won the contest. Her drawing consisted of a paw print formed of 4 filled circles. The four circles represent the four events in artistic gymnastics. The large circle represents the floor and the other 3 smaller ones the bars, the beam and finally the vault.
The Panther parent organization raised funds to purchase the necessary equipment for this new facility. With this much needed change, Panthers were able to develop and produce many top gymnasts including 1988 Olympian, Lynette Wittmeier and 7 other High Performance athletes.
December of 1990 saw a great stepping stone in the history of the Panthers and gymnastics in Manitoba. The club purchased its own building - an 11,000 sq.ft. facility - our current facility!

    History of gymnastics
The sport of Gymnastics dates far beyond the Ancient Olympic Games. Acrobats entertained Egyptian nobility about 7,000 years ago and, judging by ancient frescoes, acrobats vaulted over the backs of bulls on the island of Crete when the Minoan civilization flourished, beginning about 2,700 BC. The Chinese some 2000 years before Ancient Olympic Games practised ritual mass Gymnastic exercises as part of the art of "Wushu".
The term "gymnastics" derives from the Greek word for naked "gymnos" . In ancient Greece, male athletes trained and competed in the nude. Physical training took place in the palestra, a square, walled, open-air area equipped with changing rooms and baths. Activities included running, jumping, weightlifting, throwing, wrestling, and swimming, all classified as gymnastics.
The Romans followed the Greek example, to a point. The gymnasium was basically a training place for the Roman legions. The wooden horse was a Roman innovation, used to train soldiers to mount and dismount quickly. However, the Romans had little interest in sport for sport's sake, and the Greek practice of nude exercise was viewed with distaste, as leading to the vice of homosexuality.
