Gymnastics Ancient History
Ancient History of Gymnastics
There is little to no direct knowledge available about the earliest times of man's gymnastics activities. There is no doubt among historians that people performed gymnastics and gymnastics-related activities like tumbling, jumping, swinging movements and group acrobatics early in the history of mankind in a number of areas around the world.
The History of Sport, Exercise and Physical Fitness
Gymnastics is one of the world's oldest physical activities and sports and its roots can be traced back thousands of years. There is evidence of early forms of gymnastics in the ancient civilizations in the Middle East and Asia. Gymnastics, in the form of acrobatics, calisthenics, precision drills and disciplined exercise has been around since ancient times.
7000 Years and Counting
Gymnastics was most likely first depicted in Egyptians artifacts. The earliest known physical evidence of gymnastics can be found in the art of ancient Egypt, where female acrobats performed for the Pharoahs and the Egyptian nobility. Acrobats entertained Egyptian nobility around 7,000 years ago judging by ancient frescoes. Many of these drawings have been dated and authenticated as far back as 5000 BC. These Egyptian hieroglyphs depict such gymnastics activities as backbend variations and partner stunts.

EARLY GYMNASTICS IN AMERICA 1800s In the 1800s, American usage of the word gymnastics seems to be the all-inclusive word for the early physical training that went on in this country. There are a number of terms used in the late 1800s and early 1900s to define physical training since there wasnt much in the line of Physical Education in the schools. Some of the terms include: Light Gymnastics - which refers to the use of dumbbells, wands and clubs. Heavy Gymnastics which was the sport of mens training with the bigger apparatus. Physical Culture - again, this word seems to be interchangeable with what we consider todays physical education. Calisthenics: stretching and static movements. It is interesting trying to sort it all out. Usually, the term gymnastics included a combination light and heavy gymnastics, with calisthenics, military drills, running, some track events, and game playing.
THE GERMAN INFLUENCE Turnverein : These were German Gymnastics Societies that were first formed in Germany during the early 1800s. They were a sports and political organization. When members of the Turnverein fled Europe to escape political persecution, they became instrumental in the establishment of gymnastics in the U.S. and turnvereins were eventually started in different parts of America.

Some 3,000 years ago the Greeks, and a little later the Romans, were actively training for sport, health, and warfare. As with most activities involving sports, the Greeks held major competitions called the Olympian Games which were held in honor of the Greek God Zeus. To Zeus, the display of the beauty, strength, agility, and skill of the human body was held to be especially pleasing. The ancient games were comprised of many sports activities including gymnastics. Famous Greeks attended the games and some even participated in the ancient Olympic Games: the philosopher Socrates, Pythagoras, Plato, Aristotle and even the father of medicine, Hippocrates. Plato (big time Greek Philosopher) was a double winner of the Pankration, which was an early form of martial arts, which combined wrestling and boxing. The modern era of the Olympic Games began in 1896 in Athens, Greece and 5 countries competed with Germany who dominated gymnastics. The games have evolved during the ensuing years, and gymnastics today at the Olympic level is a sport which the Ancient Greeks would doubtless drop their teeth in disbelief at the skill and strength displayed. Consider that today's average competitive level team girls are doing skills more difficult than the Olympians of the 1960s! A scant 40 years has changed the sport immensely.

    History
Gymnastics is one of the world's oldest sports and can be traced back thousands of years. In 2000 BC, the men and women of Ancient Greece developed the sport of bull jumping, which is similar to the vaulting exercises you see today in modern gymnastics. In bull jumping, the athlete would run towards a charging bull , grab its horns and either vault onto the bull's back or vault over the bull in a somersault and land on his or her feet on the other side of the bull! This early event required both courage and strength , as well as grace and style. The Ancient Romans used gymnastics as part of their military training to improve the strength, balance and flexibility of soldiers. In the 1800s, gymnastics exercises using rings, bars, balls and mats were developed by gymnasts in Germany and Sweden. Gymnastics have been a part of the

    History of Rings
The rings, hanging on a rope and meant to swing, are relatively young in gymnastics tournaments. The former name Roman rings reminds of the older rope and pole swings of the artists and indicates Italian origins.
Adolf Spie described them for the first time as Ringeschwebel in his Turnlehre (gymnastics lesson) in 1842. Eiselen, student of Jahn, introduced the swinging horizontal bar. His rings were triangular handles. The German gymnasts could not get along too well with the still hanging rings, development took place in the Roman and Benelux states.

GutsMuths, Vieth and Jahn did not know the apparatus yet. Adolf Spie (1810-1858) is supposed to have introduced the rings as a swinging apparatus, which he called Ringeschwebel. In the textbook by Eiselen (1847), student of Jahn; there were pictures of rings with triangular handle (bow, triangle). The expression bow exercises was quite usual, too.

She didn't ask about salary, or facilities or equipment. When the letter came asking if she would be Alabama's head coach, Patterson, all of 22 years old and just out of Slippery Rock State College, gave the Crimson Tide an emphatic and unequivocal yes. Her first move as Alabama's coach was to hire David Patterson, coming out of his freshman year as a Crimson Tide diver, as an assistant coach. The couple, married in 1984, then turned to the task at hand, taking a team without a winning season and creating a juggernaut that has performed at the highest conceivable level for three decades. A fast 32 years later, "Dancing with the Stars' and "Glee' are keeping everyone glued to the TV set while Transformers 2 and The Proposal were the summer blockbusters. Mamma Mia, the year's hot DVD featured ABBA's "Take a Chance on Me' in one of its final scenes, proving yet again, everything that goes around comes back around. On the radio, the ladies rule the chart with Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Kelly Clarkson topping the music charts. And 2010 finds the little program that couldn't quite find its feet before Sarah and David Patterson came along, has won four NCAA Championships, six Southeastern Conference crowns, 24 NCAA Regional titles, 21 individual NCAA Championships and 238 All-American honors. The adventures along the way came fast and furious. Sarah found herself explaining to her boss Paul "Bear' Bryant, the Tide's legendary football coach and athletics director, why a wrestling mat with a hole in the middle wouldn't do as a floor exercise mat. "Once I explained what we needed,' Sarah Patterson said, "Coach Bryant told Coach (Sam) Bailey (Bryant's right hand man administratively) to get us what we needed. Coach Bryant wanted all our sports to be winners and he was willing to provide us with the tools.' And the facilities that Sarah hadn't asked about when taking the job, started as Foster Auditorium, where the Tide shared its practice space with the volleyball team.
