Early
American History is located in St. Augustine, Florida in the United States. Sources of early Hungarian history - The following main Hungarian chronicles contain the early legends and history of the Huns, Magyars and other Hungarians: Early history of Thailand - The known early history of Thailand begins with the earliest major archaeological site at Ban Chiang; dating of artifacts from this site is controversial, but there is a consensus that at least by 3600 BC, the inhabitants had developed bronze tools and had begun to cultivate wet rice, providing the impetus for social and political organization. Early Swedish history Early Swedish history covers the time following the pre-historic era and partly the Viking Age, and spans from cirka 800 AD, when the process of Christianization began, up to 1523, when the king Gustav Vasa was crowned. The era in a way corresponds to the European middle ages.

Chapter 7
EARLY WASHINGTON STATE GYMNASTICS HISTORY
In 1897 the AAU recognized Gymnastics as a sport. Therefore it is possible that gymnastics was beginning in Washington State by that time. It is known that in 1916 the German Turnvereins, located in downtown Seattle, had a gymnastic program. Other organizations, which had programs at this time included the Seattle YMCA, the Elks Club and The Sokols. Throughout the state, exhibition teams were formed to develop enthusiasts. Gymnastic competitions were held after the turn of the century. (11) An unnamed gentleman who was a circus performer with Ringling Brothers set up gymnast equipment in a vacant lot near his house in the 1930's and had a great influence on the young men in that area. He set up his equipment on the corner of 98th street just off of 5th Ave. N.W. One of the boys he influenced, Gifford Owens, went on to become a catcher for the Ringling Brothers Circus.(11) The Green Lake Fieldhouse had exhibitions in those early years and competitions were held at the Seattle YMCA. The AAU, from 1936-1941, held the Pacific Northwest Championships in Vancouver, B.C. There were three levels of competition - novice, junior and senior. (11) Lou Bates was an early director of physical education at the Seattle YMCA and supported the growth of gymnastics in this state.(11)

Dedicated to Mary Sarver. Mary Sarver started this process years ago and through the passing down of her work, Lee took it over in 2001 and it is a continual process.
Mary J. Sarver: " In 1998, Jerry Penny of Sammamish High School and the W.I.A.A. (Washington Interscholastic Activities Association) requested that I write down what I remember about the development of the Girls' High School Gymnastics in the State of Washington." (Mary did initially include boys’ gymnastics as well as much background information.) Mary graduated from Western Washington 1955. She went to Denmark to the Gymnastic Folk High School for one year and then back to WA to Highline Junior High and worked with Ev Woodward in gymnastics. She then went to Highline H.S. in 1958-59. Had first H.S. team and competed in Canada 1959 AAU. Went to Seattle YMCA for help from George Lewis. Mary put on clinics, workshops, and was an instructor and co-director of Gym Kamp (Camp Waskowitz) and taught at Highline Junior College. Attended first National Gymnastics Conference. Wrote in the first Gymnastic Guide Book. Mary wrote the "Beam" section to Eric Hughes 1963 book Gymnastics for Girls . I also noticed in my copy of DGWS Gymnastics Guide June 1963-1965, that Mary wrote the section on Floor Exercise. Inducted into the WSGCA Hall of Fame in 1998 and the USAG WA Hall of Fame 2004. Died 2004.

Olympic Gymnastics History
As a teenager Beth Stone always dreamed of having her own gymnastics school in her backyard. She trained in the sport and made her plans for 8 years until in 1978 her mother funded Solar Gym at the corner of Gilbert and McKellips in Mesa. Beth sold out to her partner and started Olympic Gymnastics with her son, Jason in 1999. They had originally planned to build on their property at Higley and Guadalupe in the back yard, but concern from neighbors made them reconsider, and they leased for 7 years at Guadalupe and Recker in Gilbert. Although the concept of Olympic Gymnastics was to stay small and compete only up to level 6 gymnastics, the enrollment grew quickly and the level of gymnasts rose. After only 3 years, there were girls preparing to compete at optional level 7. Most of these girls did not want to transfer to another gym and leave Jason and Beth, so Olympic Gym - Mesa was opened. The Mesa facility was larger, with higher ceilings and could accommodate the higher level athletes, although evaporative cooling was a definite down side. Gymnasts from both gyms have been very successful in competitions these past 4 years, with some going on to regional competitions.
