Main article: Music of Haiti Haitian Compas (sometimes written as Compas Direct, konpa direk, konpa, or kompa) is a musical genre as well as a dance that originates from Haïti. It was named «Compas Direct» by Nemours Jean-Baptiste on a recording released in 1955. The name derives from compas , the Spanish word meaning rhythm or tones. It involves mostly medium-to-fast tempo beats with an emphasis on electric guitars, synthesizers, and either a solo alto saxophone, a horn section or the synthesizer equivalent. Unlike zouk (which derives from compas), the lyrics are mostly in Haitian Creole. Compas or "Kompa", a musical genre born of French and Spanish music combined with African-derived drumming and Haitian Creole-sung verses. Haiti's music (especially Compas) bears several similarities to its Spanish-speaking neighbors yet it is unique in its own right.

Identification. Location and Geography. Haiti covers 10,714 square miles (27,750 square kilometers). It is located in the subtropics on the western third of Hispaniola, the second largest island in the Caribbean, which it shares with the Spanish-speaking Dominican Republic. The neighboring islands include Cuba, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. Three-quarters of the terrain is mountainous; the highest peak is the Morne de Selle. The climate is mild, varying with altitude. The mountains are calcareous rather than volcanic and give way to widely varying microclimatic and soil conditions. A tectonic fault line runs through the country, causing occasional and sometimes devastating earthquakes. The island is also located within the Caribbean hurricane belt. Demography.

Saving Fabiola's soul in the name of Jesus
Tens of thousands of Catholics, Protestants and Voodoo believers gathered in Port-au-Prince for 3 days to pray, sing and get on God's good side. " The earthquake is a wake up call that God is angry, and Haiti got struck because of its sins. " ( This sentiment has been widely expressed by those attending the event ) During the celebration, Fabiola Alexis,18, had to be carried out of the crowd when she fell in a trance. Pastors on the look out for "sinners"declared she was possessed by the devil , and her soul has to be saved. For over an hour Fabiola was yelled at, verbally abused, shoved and at times restrained on the ground with her arms behind her back. Her earrings were confiscated and some of her hair were unbraided while the Haitian police watched passively.

HAITI FORMALLY RENOUNCED its colonial bond with France in January 1804, as the result of the only successful slave rebellion in world history. The country's longevity as an independent nation in the Western Hemisphere is second only to that of the United States. Over this span of almost two centuries, however, the country has never known a period free of tyranny, repression, political conflict, racial animosity, and economic hardship. Haiti, the first black republic in modern times, sprang directly to self-governance from French colonialism, a system that had a profound impact on the nation. Haiti's colonial origins had demonstrated that an illiterate and impoverished majority could be ruled by a repressive elite. The slaveholding system had established the efficacy of violence and coercion in controlling others, and the racial prejudice inherent in the colonial system survived under the black republic. A lightskinned elite assumed a disproportionate share of political and economic power. The chaotic and personalistic nature of Haitian political culture combined with chronic underdevelopment to provide fertile ground for a succession of despots, strongmen, and dictators. Even the few national leaders whose election apparently reflected popular sentiment, such as Dumarsais Estimé (1946-50) and François Duvalier (1957-71), rejected constitutional procedures in favor of retaining personal power. The popular revolt that deposed President for life Jean-Claude Duvalier (1971-86) demonstrated the Haitian people's rejection of parasitic despotism. At the same time, however, the revolt reaffirmed another lesson of Haitian history: violence has often been the only effective route to change.

Haiti Culture
Haiti culture and traditions is a mix of French and Spanish cultures. Read on to know more. Haiti is located in the Western Hemisphere and is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, the Golfe De la Gonave and the Atlantic Ocean. It is believed that the first known settlers were the Ciboneys who occupied the country in 450 AD. Later in 900 AD, Arawak Indians settled in the large villages of Haiti and called this nation Ayiti , meaning the "Land of Mountains".
On December 5, 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered this nation during his voyage. The Spaniards of Christopher Columbus killed the Arawaks, and for many years, this island had no human population. Towards the mid-17th century, the French colonized Haiti, and during the reign of France, Haiti was one of the most popular islands of the Western Hemisphere. The main source of wealth came from coffee, cocoa, sugarcane and cotton. The French brought the Afrikaans to work as slaves on these plantations.
In 1791, the slaves revolted against the French rule and attained freedom in 1804. Haiti became the first independent black nation and was headed by General Jean-Jacques Dessalines. In 1884, Haiti was divided into Haiti and Dominican Republic. During World War II, Americans occupied Haiti. Here we look at the rich "Haiti Culture".

Oprah Book Club® Selection, May 1998: "I come from a place where breath, eyes and memory are one, a place from which you carry your past like the hair on your head. Where women return to their children as butterflies or as tears in the eyes of the statues that their daughters pray to." The place is Haiti and the speaker is Sophie, the heroine of Edwidge Danticat's novel, "Breath, Eyes, Memory." Like her protagonist, Danticat is also Haitian; like her, she was raised in Haiti by an aunt until she came to the United States at age 12. Indeed, in her short stories, Danticat has often drawn on her background to fund her fiction, and she continues to do so in her debut novel.
