Halitosis (Bad Breath)
What causes bad breath?
Most bad breath (also called halitosis) comes from something in your mouth. Food sticks between your teeth, around the gums and on your tongue. If you don't brush and floss your teeth every day, this food can rot. The rotten bits of food cause a bad smell in your mouth. Rotten food also helps bacteria grow in your mouth. These bacteria can cause gum disease (also called gingivitis). Gingivitis also causes bad breath.
The things you eat and drink can also affect your breath. Common examples of foods and beverages that may cause bad breath include onions, garlic, cheese, pastrami, certain spices, orange juice and soda. Once these foods are digested, their oils are absorbed into your bloodstream and carried into the lungs. The odor is given off in your breath until all of the food is out of your body.
Bad breath may also be a sign of a health problem. Sinus infections, chronic lung infections, liver or kidney diseases, and diabetes are some health conditions that may cause bad breath.

What does the term halitosis mean?
Just in case you are wondering, halitosis is medical terminology for bad breath. Halitosis is derived from the Latin word "halitus," which means breath, and the Greek suffix "osis," which means condition. It's somewhat fitting that the formal term for bad breath has been derived from words from ancient languages. Hebraic literature (the Talmud) dating back over two thousand years ago states that a marriage license (the Ketuba) can be broken if one of the partners has breath malodor. Similar references can be found in the literature of the Greeks, Romans and early Christians.

Halitosis
Introduction Historically, bad breath has had many names...halitosis, fetor oris, fetor ex ore. The terms bad breath, halitosis, and breath malodor all mean an unpleasant breath odor that is objectionable to others. The truth is that bad breath under any name can be an indication of a serious disease entity for many people and a life time of social problems for others. Nearly everyone, in fact, experiences bouts of halitosis from time to time. It is fortunate that most bad breath is caused by oral conditions. The history of halitosis is well documented with references to the condition dating back to ancient civilizations. Halitosis, from the Latin for breath (hali) and condition (tosis), refers to a systemic-related malodor. Fetor ex ore and fetor oris are terms that directly relate to oral conditions producing malodor. Researchers and experts in the malodor field have suggested that the condition should be referenced as oral malodor or nonoral malodor. Oral malodor can be either transitory or chronic. Transitory malodor is described as a food-related malodor that may last up to 72 hours and is a condition all individuals suffer from at one time or another. Chronic malodor is generally oral-related and in some cases due to a medical/ systemic condition, such as diabetes. The individual usually seeks out dental treatment because of a toothache, bleeding gums, unhappiness with the appearance of his/her teeth, or because he/she has been told that he/she has bad breath. The dental profession has dealt quite adequately with the first three of these complaints, but has tended to neglect the fourth or the malodor complaint.

Halitosis Means bad breath or foul smelling breath. The bad smell that comes from food items such as garlic or onion or cigarette smoking or alcohol has a characteristic recognizable bad smell. The Halitosis or foul breath that is refereed to here is most commonly due to putrefaction of food particles by the excessive growth of bacteria in the mouth, unhealthy gums and teeth, white coating on the tongue repeated ulcer in mouth are all places where abnormal bacteria grow in large numbers and lead to bad breath. Other causes includes constipation and other digestive disturbances due to problems in gastro intestinal tract; renal diseases, liver disease or even a badly controlled diabetes.
How do we prevent or cure Halitosis?
It is very important to have a holistic approach to this problem at physical level - (a) cleaning the mouth and tongue and gums. It is not enough if you just brush the teeth daily. Yoga recommends tongue cleaning and massage (Jihavadohana) and gum massage with fingers as important daily practices to be followed after brushing the teeth. Their two procedures are to be practiced for 5 minutes each using both the thumb and the index finger of both hands. This not only cleans the food particles and dead organic matter in the mouth but the pressure and massage increases the blood flow and healthy cell turn over in the oral cavity preventing abnormal bacteria growth.
