Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a deadly disease transmitted by infected rodents through urine, droppings, or saliva. Humans can contract the disease when they breathe in aerosolized virus. Rodent control in and around the home remains the primary strategy for preventing hantavirus infection.
    What is hantavirus?
Hantaviruses are a family of several viruses found in rodents. These viruses havecaused serious human health problems in other parts of the world (mainly the FarEast, Scandinavia, and eastern Europe). In 1993, a new strain of hantavirus wasidentified as the cause of severe illnesses in the southwestern U.S. This new strainattacks the lungs and causes a condition called Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome.
    How is hantavirus transmitted?
The virus may also be spread by a bite from an infected rodent, but this type of spread is very rare. Insect bites and household pets are notthought to play a role in hantavirus transmission. In addition, squirrels, birds, hamsters, and rabbits are not known carriers of the hantavirus. There is noevidence of person-to-person transmission of the hantavirus in the U.S. Return to Top

Hantavirus Classification and external resources ICD B ICD MeSH Hantaviruses belong to the Bunyaviridae family of viruses . The Bunyaviridae family is divided into 5 genera: Orthobunyavirus Nairovirus Phlebovirus Tospovirus , and Hantavirus . Like all members of this family, hantaviruses have genomes comprising three negative-sense , single-stranded RNA segments, and so are classified as negative sense RNA viruses . Viruses in the genus Hantavirus are unique in that they are transmitted by aerosolized rodent excretia or rodent bites, whereas all other genera in the Bunyaviridae family are arthropod -borne viruses. The name hantavirus is derived from the Hantan River , where the Hantaan virus (the etiologic agent of Korean hemorrhagic fever ) was first isolated by Dr.

Humans are thought to become infected when they are exposed to contaminated dust from mice nests or droppings. The disease is not passed between humans. People may encounter contaminated dust when cleaning long-empty homes, sheds, or other enclosed areas. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that rodents carrying hantavirus have been found in at least twenty national parks. The CDC says it is possible that the virus is in all of the parks.

Vector Borne and Zoonotic Disease Hantavirus Hantavirus in the United States and Arizona In May 1993, health officials investigated an outbreak of an unusual illness in the southwestern United States that can cause a person's lungs to fill with fluid. The investigation led to the identification of a new viral disease called Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS). Since its discovery, HPS cases have been reported across the United States. What causes Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS)? HPS is caused by a newly identified strain of hantavirus found in certain types of rodents. It is similar to other hantaviruses except it attacks the lungs while most other related viruses affect the kidneys. The strain found in the western United States is called the Sin Nombre virus (Spanish for “virus with no name”) and is carried primarily by wild mice, particularly deer mice (
