A harpsichord is a musical instrument played by means of a keyboard. It produces sound by plucking a string when each key is pressed. As well as the large instrument currently called a harpsichord, the harpsichord family also includes the smaller virginals, the muselar or muselaar virginals and the spinet. The harpsichord was widely used in baroque music. It became less popular following the invention of the piano, but is still used in contemporary music due to its distinctive sound.

The harpsichord displays the name of its creator on the jackrail: “Vaudry a Paris 1681.” Vaudry was apparently the proprietor of a workshop in Paris and, according to a tradition, was “instrument maker to the court.” This seems quite possible, since an Antoine Vaudry – probably Jean-Antoine Vaudry, who lived ca. 1680-1750, and was undoubtedly a younger relative of our maker – is known to have been “seul maitre faiseur d'instruments du Roi.” The instrument, which is about 2.17 meters in length, displays numerous elements characteristic of seventeenth-century French harpsichord construction. On the other hand a surprising characteristic of lute construction can be seen in the elaborate system of delicate ribs, otherwise unknown in harpsichord building. There are three sets of strings, 8’ and 4’ on the lower manual, and one 8’ on the upper, with an original manual coupler. In keeping with several strings that were still in the instrument when it was acquired by the museum, it is strung in brass and iron. The tuning pitch is the Old French ton de chapelle of a´ = 392 Hz.

I have used this CD in the past with my kindergarten and 1st grade students and it is just delightful! The children love the movements to the music via the narrator. Mirror moves is especially fun for the children, as they work with their partners in following the directions given. Young children need to express themselves through movement, and this Mozart introduction allows the little ones to ...

This is Classical music from classic movies such as: Somewhere in Time, Schindler's List, English Patient, The Piano, Platoon, et al. What a fabulous resource!
As a music educator, I've found the recorded excerpts to be wonderfully and logically organized and presented. I've always been an instrumental music teacher only, but find myself teaching general music classes this year, and absolutely love what I've used so far. The last disc alone shows the fascinating evolution of the modern orchestra. Every other track is narrative text, the script of ...

WARNING!! A great cd BUT.... I know I gave this cd 5 stars; it deserves it. Every piece is so finely textured and lush. BUT the version of the Canon on this cd, as beautiful as it is, IS NOT the original version recorded by Paillard. This cd contains a new version which has been slightly re-arranged and speeded up a bit. The version on this cd is a minute shorter than the original which can be found on the ERATO cd, ... The End of Europe's Middle Ages Music If you do not have an applicable plug-in, the audio files in this chapter can be heard with Crescendo 3.0 Musical developments in the later Middle Ages reflect changes in the political arena during that period. Secular lords were emerging from under the overarching influence of the Church and establishing their authority based on secular Roman and Common law. This movement away from the mystical religious world of the Church and towards the material and concrete world of earth penetrated the whole of medieval society, including its music. Early Medieval Sacred Music - Gregorian Chant The beginnings of later medieval music can be traced to the Church. The papacy had always been a patron of the arts, especially during the Early and High Middle Ages when the Church dominated medieval life. The composers and innovators of the new musical trends were often church officers, but as the later Middle Ages progressed, composers increasingly came from secular backgrounds and the material world became the driving force behind artistic developments. Even musical styles were subject to this secularisation. For example, the motet , which originated in the religious music of the thirteenth century, quickly moved out of the church and into the courts of the nobility, becoming the dominant form of secular music in the fourteenth century. The motet became so unreligious that Pope John XXII issued a bull in 1326 forbidding the motet to be performed in churches.

However, whatever one's taste may be for "authenticity", there is no denying that Richter's performance is a superb example of virtuosity that has few equals. Richter's frequent use of the 16 foot stop in his playing is effective in bringing out a sense of grandeur in Bach's music and puts to shame the ninny sounding performances of Bach's music using historic harpsichord instruments. This harpsichord is inspired by the very interesting work of 18th century Parisian makers, Jean-Henry Hemsch and Nicolas Blanchet. In the designing this instrument, I have incorporated, among other elements, the box-structure of an instrument of Hemsch (1761; Muse du Conservatoire de Paris) and Blanchet's string scale. My goal has been to recreate a sonority appropriate for the 18th century French repertoire, with all its charm and lightness.
