Hawaii Geography and Climate
Hawaii, the 50th state (Statehood on Aug. 21, 1959) of the United States of America, consists of a group of volcanic islands in the central Pacific Ocean. The land area of these islands are the emerged tops of a chain of volcanic mountains that form eight major islands and 124 islets, stretching in a 1,500-mile crescent from Kure Island in the west to the island of Hawaii in the east, encompassing an area of 6,459 square miles (16,729 square km). The eight major islands at the eastern end of the chain are, from west to east, Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and the Big Island of Hawaii. Volcanic activity has become dormant, with the exception of the volcanoes of Mauna Loa and Kilauea on the easternmost and largest island, Hawaii, where spectacular eruptions and lava flows take place from time to time. The highest Hawaiian mountains are Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, reaching 13,796 feet (4,205 m) and 13,678 feet (4,169 m) above sea level, respectively. There is little erosion in the geologically young areas, where the terrain is domelike and the volcanic craters are clearly defined. In the older areas the mountains have been shaped and eroded by the action of sea, rain, and wind. Their aspects thus include sharp and craggy silhouettes; abrupt, vertically grooved cliffs pocked with caves; deep valleys; collapsed craters (calderas); and coastal plains.

Hawaii is located in the North Pacific Ocean. It is in the southwestern corner and about 2300 miles (3,700 km) from the mainland of the United States. It is surrounded by water and does not share border with any other state. In 2005, it has an estimated population of 1,275,194. It has 10,931 sq miles (28,311sq km). Visit the state after securing American visa, it is beautiful.
Hawaii, also known as the Sandwich Islands, has more endangered species per square mile than anywhere else. Some places where you can visit are Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, Kalaupapa National Historical Park in Kalaupapa, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, , Haleakala National Park in Kula and Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park in Kailua-Kona.
The largest city in Hawaii is its capital, Honolulu, located along the southeast coast of the island of Oahu. Other major cities include Hilo, Kailua, Kaneohe, Pearl City, Kahului, Kailua-Kona, Kihei, and Lihue. Official languages are both English and Hawaiian. But you can manage to communicate in English when you come to the state with US visa.
Hawaii climate is less extreme due to the influence of surrounding ocean. Humidity is also not extreme. Summer maximum temperatures sometime reach above 80 F while in winter temperatures seldom dip below 55 F. Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island receive snowfall in winter months. Its island of Kauai is famous for rainfall. It gets the second highest average annual rainfall on Earth: about 460 inches (11.7 m).

Hilo is the largest town on the island of Hawaii , and the county seat of Hawaii County, Hawaii . As of the census, the CDP had a total population of 40,759. Hilo's location on the eastern side of the island of Hawaii ( windward relative to the trade wind s) makes it one of the wettest cities in the world. An average of 129.19 inches of rain falls on Hilo annually. Its location on the shore of funnel-shaped Hilo Bay also makes it vulnerable to tsunami s. On April 1 a 7.8 magnitude earthquake near the Aleutian Islands created a 14-meter high tsunami that hit Hilo hours later killing 159 people. As a result, an early warning system was established to track these killer waves and provide warning. On May 23 , another tsunami, caused by an 8.6 magnitude

So you want to know what makes a Hawaiian island? Great, you're in the right place. While every island has its own story, and we'll touch on that, only one is a living example of a Hawaiian Island in the works - the Big Island. It's the perfect specimen to examine and use as an example. That said, let's take a look at the geology of the only island you can still see physically growing by day.
    The 'Hot Spot'
So what exactly is this 'hot spot' you hear so much about, and how does it form these beautiful islands? The answer to this question is fairly simple. The Hawaiian Islands are situated near the middle of the "Pacific Plate" on top of a 'hot spot.' This Pacific Plate is almost always moving northwestward at a rate of several centimeters per year, about the same rate as your fingernails grow. This constant northwestward movement of the Pacific Plate over a local volcanic "hot spot," or plume, has produced a series of islands, one after another in assembly line fashion. The result is a chain of volcanic islands (Hawaiian archipelago) that consists of eight major islands and 124 islets stretching from the Big Island of Hawai'i along a northwest line for 1,500 miles toward Japan and the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. In total, the islands spread across an area of 6,459 square miles. The link above shows one perspective of this chain of islands. This link shows another view of the

United States Geography The Hawaiian archipelago is a string of islands and reefs, 3,300 kilometers long, that forms a broad arc in the mid-Pacific. The archipelago begins in the east with the island of Hawaii and ends almost at the international date line with a small speck in the ocean called Kure Atoll. Only the easternmost 650 kilometers of the state contains islands of any size, as well as almost all of the state's population. It is this portion that is usually considered as the actual "Hawaii." The eight main islands of HawaiiOahu, Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, Lanai, Molokai, Niihau, and Kahoolawecontain more than 99 percent of the state's land area and all but a handful of its people. The island of Hawaii, at 8,150 square kilometers, comprises nearly two-thirds of the state's total area, and it is often referred to as simply the Big Island. The smallest of the eight, Kahoolawe, is 125 square kilometers and is uninhabited. LOCATION AND PHYSICAL SETTING Hawaii is near the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
