    The State of Hawaii comprises of 8 major and 124 minor islands. These were all created due to volcanic eruptions. Mauna Loa, on the island of Hawaii, is the world's largest active volcano, at a height of 13,675 ft (4,168 m). Kilauea, on the eastern slope of Mauna Loa, is the world's largest active volcanic crater. Hawaii is also prone to earthquakes and there have been 14 earthquakes each with a magnitude of 5 or more on the Richter scale that shook the islands from 1969 to 1979. Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, and Molokai are the most mountainous islands. The highest peak in the state is Puu Wekiu (13,796 ft/4,208 m), on Hawaii. The largest natural lake is Halulu (182 acres/74 ha) while Niihau is the largest artificial lake of the state of Hawaii.

    Read and make geographic representations (i.e., maps, globes, graphs, charts, models) to locate and describe locations, distances, directions, and scale. Performance Standards
    The student will:
    1. Create a map that includes the title, orientation, date, authors name, legend and scale.
    2. Show the selected features (man made and/or natural) of the environment being studied.
    3. Use geographical terms to describe a specific location and human/physical characteristics of a place. 4-5 Grade Cluster Benchmark
    Collect, organize, and analyze data to interpret and construct geographic representations. Performance Standards
    The student will:
    1. Show organization of collected data.

    Hawaii Geography
    Kailua-Kona, Hawaii is located at 19°38'60" North, 155°59'39" West (19.649973, -155.994028)GR1, along the shoreline of Kailua Bay, Hawaii and up the southern slope of Hualālai volcano. There are no major rivers or streams in Kailua-Kona or on the Kona side of Hawaii.
    According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 103.0 km² (39.8 mi²). 91.9 km² (35.5 mi²) of it is land and 11.0 km² (4.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.71% water.
    The state of Hawaii consists of eight main islands: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe and the Big Island of Hawaii.
    From east to west Hawaii is the widest state in the United States.
