Raptors, representative of those that may cause damage by preying on poultry and other birds, pets, and other animals: (a) the goshawk ( Accipiter gentilis ), (b) red-tailed hawk ( Buteo jamaicensis ), and (c) great horned owl ( Bubo virginianus
Introduction
Hawks and owls are birds of prey and are frequently referred to as raptors— a term that includes the falcons, eagles, vultures, kites, ospreys, northern harriers, and crested caracaras. Food habits vary greatly among the raptors. Hawks and owls are highly specialized predators that take their place at the top of the food chain. Some are responsible for the loss of poultry or small game. In the past, raptors were persecuted through indiscriminate shooting, poisoning, and pole trapping. The derogatory term chicken hawk was used generically to identify raptors, especially hawks, but has fallen out of usage during the past two decades. Recently, many people have developed a more enlightened attitude toward raptors and their place in the environment. People who experience raptor damage problems should immediately seek information and/or assistance. “Frustration killings” occur far too often because landowners are unfamiliar with or unable to control damage with nonlethal control techniques. These killings result in the needless loss of raptors, and they may lead to undesirable legal actions. If trapping or shooting is necessary, permits should be requested and processed as quickly as possible. Always consider the benefits that raptors provide before removing them from an area; their ecological importance, aesthetic value, and contributions as indicators of environmental health may outweigh the economic damage they cause.

Howard Hawks (1896 - 1977) American film director, screenwriter, and producer, the supreme craftsman, whose works gained acclaim first among French auteur theorists and then among American critics. Hawks directed well over forty films, from gangster movies like SCARFACE (1932) to comedies like BRINGING UP BABY (1938) and HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940), and Westerns like RED RIVER (1948) and RIO BRAVO (1959). His films have later inspired among others John Carpenter, Brian De Palma, Walter Hill, Peter Bogdanovich, and John Milius. During his career Hawks collaborated with such writers as Jules Furthman, William Faulkner Raymond Chandler Ben Hecht , Nunnally Johnson, and Leigh Brackett. "I've always been rather mechanical-minded, so I tried a whole lot of mechanical things, and then gave them up completely. The best thing to do is to tell a story as though you're seeing it. Tell it from your eyes. Let the audience see exactly as they would if they were there. Just tell it normally. Most of the time, my camera stays on eye level now. Once in a while, I'll move the camera as if a man were walking and seeing something. And it pulls back or it moves in for emphasis when you don't want to make a cut. But outside that, I just use the simplest camera in the world." (Hawks in Who the Devil Made It by Peter Bogdanovich, 1997)

Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) Female, hatched in 1989. She was found along a highway in eastern New Mexico. She had a fractured right wing and a severe case of "bumblefoot," a bacterial or fungal infection of the foot. She is a human imprint, which means that she has no fear of humans. This can be dangerous for the bird and people due to her territorially aggressive nature. If released, she would not recognize other Red-tailed Hawks, and would not reproduce. She is also unable to hunt for her own food since she has had food provided for her all her life. We believe that she was taken from the nest by somebody who wanted her as a pet. She is not fully flighted, and her right wing droops slightly. Her large size makes her a favorite in educational programs. Male, hatched in 1995. He arrived on August 14, 1995 from Kirtland Air Force Base. He was harassed by American Crows, and flew into a power line. He suffered from an electric shock and fell to the ground. Eventually the metacarpal on the left wing, and fourth toe on the right foot were removed due to damage from the electrical burn. This has resulted in no flight abilities, and he has trouble reaching perches. His bold coloration makes him received at programs. He is very active, and can be nervous in front of large audiences. He currently lives with a female Red-tailed Hawk. Female, hatched in 1993. She came from the Los Lunas area with a gunshot wound to her head. She also has damage to the right wing. Although healed, her wing droops, and she is not fully flighted. She also has damage to her left eye. It is not known if the eye damage is related to the pellet in her head. She may see some light and movement, but she is essentially blind in that eye. Her balance is affected, and she sometimes needs assistance perching. Her injury allows us to teach others about the importance of respecting wildlife and responsible hunting. She currently lives with a male Red-tailed Hawk.

    59. Scriptorium - John Hawkes
Mark Hamstra on Hawkes and his novels.
    http://www.themodernword.com/scriptorium/hawkes.html
By Mark Hamstra John Hawkes It is an unfortunate irony that the very social and cultural wasteland compelling writers like John Hawkes to write disturbing and difficult novels also robs them of a general audience with the time and patience to read, puzzle, and understand them. Hawkes died in 1998, the same year as William Gaddis , a contemporary who also wrote complex, labyrinthine novels. Both writers were frequent targets for hostile criticism, often accused of writing "strange" books which pursued originality to the point of obscurity. (Though it might be useful to note that strangeness and originality, according to Harold Bloom in The Western Canon , are the two elements that secure the future readership of a writer's work.)
Hawkes' books attempt to portray the dark cisterns beneath everyday reality. His work challenges readers to wade into the black waters of the violent, the comic, and the sexual; to sift through elements embedded in the past, with the ghosts of regret death existing side by side with hope for the future. Although these themes may be universal, what makes Hawkes remarkable is the presentation of these motifs and his ostensibly paradoxical technique: his prose is feverish yet stylized, his novels are seemingly chaotic yet structured, and even his characters delicately dance between reality and metaphor. He also experiments with time and space, both in his narrative technique as well as in the consciousness of his very characters. Indeed, this relationship is very important, as
