The fall afterschool Wellness Program Standards Increase the Professional Stature of Physical Education The National Physical Education Standards demonstrate that physical education has academic standing equal to other subject areas. They describe achievement, show the knowledge and skill matter, and confirm that mere willing participation is not the same as education. In short, national physical education standards bring accountability and rigor to the profession. Childhood obesity is one of our nation’s leading health threats. And the prevention of childhood obesity is a critical focus for the American Heart Association as an integral part of achieving our mission: building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

MCPS Curriculum The good news is that research has revealed that health risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death in the United States are often developed during childhood and prevention is the best cure for chronic disease. School health education provides the fundamental basis for instilling behaviors into our young people to prevent or delay the onset of the leading causes of death in our country. An Investment in Our Nations Future, 2007
Physical education plays a critical role in educating the whole student. Research supports the importance of movement in educating both mind and body. Physical education contributes directly to development of physical competence and fitness. It also helps students to make informed choices and understand the value of leading a physically active lifestyle. The benefits of physical education can affect both academic learning and physical activity patterns of students. The healthy, physically active student is more likely to be academically motivated, alert, and successful. A Position Paper from the National Association for

    Mission Statement
Our foremost mission is to foster superior levels of educational participation and academic success among our students, and, in so doing, enable them to acquire the necessary job skills to attain entry-level positions in the fields of health care or fitness. The School of Health and Physical Education collaborates with Bay Area hospitals and other health care institutions to ensure that, upon completion of study, our students are prepared to respond to the current community health concerns. History
The School of Health and Physical Education was founded in 1993 during a major re-organization of City Colleges departments and programs. Today, all of City Colleges health programs and services are under the coordination and supervision of a Dean. The current structure eliminates the unnecessary duplication of classes and allows for greater communication between the programs and departments of the School of Health and Physical Education. Todays structure provides students with greater flexibility in moving from one health program to another. Jobs Job Board Contact Information
