Introducing ECETOC "The strength of ECETOC is not simply its scientific credibility, which is essential, but also its capacity to address real world issues confronting the industry as a whole or in part"
Martin Kayser, Chairman of the Board of Administration
ECETOC was established in 1978 as a scientific, non-profit making, non-commercial association and currently counts as its members 49 of the leading companies with interests in the manufacture and use of chemicals. An independent organisation, ECETOC provides a scientific forum through which the extensive specialist expertise of manufacturers and users can be harnessed to research, evaluate, assess, and publish reviews on the ecotoxicology and toxicology of chemicals, biomaterials and pharmaceuticals. The Association's main objective is to identify, evaluate, and through such knowledge help the industry to minimise any potentially adverse effects on human health and the environment that may arise from the manufacture and use of chemicals. To achieve this, ECETOC facilitates the networking of suitably qualified scientists from its member companies and co-operates in a scientific context with international agencies, government authorities and professional societies.

Californian Medical Association backs moves to limit BPA exposure, and other BPA developments in October.
Briefing Leave a Comment
October was a busy month for BPA. The Californian Medical Association passed a resolution “recogniz[ing] a public health concern for Bisphenol A (BPA), a known endocrine disruptor, and endors[ing] efforts to reduce towards elimination of BPA in consumer products”. ( CMA Resolution 116a-10, PDF The government of Canada formally declared bisphenol A, to be a toxic substance , while the Danish Minister of Food said Denmark will not be rescinding its precautionary ban on BPA. The European Food Safety Authority’s recent statement that it has no reason to change the tolerable daily intake level for BPA is becoming increasingly controversial. The progress of the debate is well summarised by John Hendel of The Atlantic. Hendel charts the emergence of the controversy over the use of the substance, with researcher Fred vom Saal as a central character in the story, and includes an explanation of why toxicology needs to be reformed. Bryan Walsh, a TIME magazine journalist who has covered BPA in detail

Health Environment . Studies have shown that moisture commonly found in conventional flush urinals can act as a host to a number or microbes
Home Products Maintenance Savings Funding ... Effects of Global Warming Studies have shown that moisture commonly found in conventional flush urinals can act as a host to a number or microbes, bacteria and even viruses. When a water using urinal is flushed these pathogens become airborne settling either on the surrounding surfaces or being inhaled by the urinal user. A second major source of potential contamination with a flush type urinal is the flush valve handle. It should be noted that non water using urinals eliminates these potential sources of pathogenic contamination. The chemical reaction between urine and water, which commonly occurs with the use of flush type urinals, is responsible for the formation of ammonia oxide. It is this reaction that produces the some of the odors frequently occurring where urinals are in use. By choosing to use non water urinals this chemical reaction is reduced along with the resulting unpleasant odors. Yes-the restroom may actually smell better! The Reality and Impacts of Climate Change The Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change and a panel of the US National Academy of Sciences (commissioned by George Bush) are agreed on the three main points:1)the earth is warming;2)human activities is largely to blame; and 3)the warming trend is likely to accelerate in the years ahead. The implications are profound and will affect fundamental human survival needs ranging from food security to a reliable water supply to the loss of land to rising oceans.
