What are congenital heart defects?
Congenital (kon-JEN-i-tal) heart defects are problems with the heart's structure that are present at birth. These defects can involve the interior walls of the heart, valves inside the heart, or the arteries and veins that carry blood to the heart or out to the body. Congenital heart defects change the normal flow of blood through the heart. There are many different types of congenital heart defects. They range from simple defects with no symptoms to complex defects with severe, life-threatening symptoms.

The most commonly heard heart term, cardiac , comes from the Greek kardia . The possible first use of this Greek word for cardiac or heart goes back about 2,300 years to the era of the Greek philosopher Aristotle (384-322 B.C.). The father of Aristotle was a noted physician by the name of Nicomachus. This familial tie prompted Aristotle to study anatomy and disease under Plato. After observing the activity of an embryonic heart in an incubating egg, it was Aristotle who named the largest artery in the body: aorta . Subsequently, Aristotle tutored Alexander the Great, who later conquered Egypt and founded the city of Alexandria, which became a world center of science and medicine. The physician Erasistratos founded a school of anatomy and, by dissection, he discovered the heart consisted of four separate chambers.

Heart disease
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Heart disease is a general term that means that the heart is not working normally. Babies can be born with heart disease . This is called congenital heart disease . If people get heart disease later, it is called acquired heart disease . Most heart disease is acquired. The three most common types of acquired heart disease are:
  • Coronary Artery Disease acronym CAD) – This is a problem with the blood vessels that deliver blood to the heart muscle. If these blood vessels get very small, or if they become blocked, blood cannot flow through them normally.Since less blood is supplied to the heart muscle the muscle cannot work at normal capacity. The heart muscle can become sick and weak. IHeart muscle can even die if blood flow stops. Blocked arteries in the heart are often the caused by smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and inherited traits from parents. All of these problems damage the lining of the heart's blood vessels and make them become narrowed or blocked completely. Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) – This is a condition that means that the heart is not pumping at normal levels. Two common causes are a weak or sick heart muscle and the other is abnormal heart valves. The valves may not let enough blood through because they are too narrowed. Or the valve may "leak" and let blood flow backwards (the wrong direction) inside the heart. When the heart valves don't work normally, the heart muscle has to do extra work and it can become tired or fatigued.

However, for most people, the heart functions remarkably well from birth, beating a little more than once a second throughout their lives. Beyond risk factors related to heredity, gender, and age, many of the risk factors involve aspects that people can control, such as smoking, high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, obesity, lack of physical activity, and poor management of stress and anger.

Your heart is an amazing powerhouse that pumps and circulates 5 or 6 gallons of blood each minute through your entire body.
Heart disease begins when cholesterol, fatty material, and calcium build up in the arteries, a process known as atherosclerosis.
Blockage of the coronary arteries by plaque may cause a heart attack (myocardial infarction) or a fatal rhythm disturbance (sudden cardiac arrest).
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S.

What is Heart disease? There are many types of heart disease. About 25% of all Americans have one or more types of cardiovascular disease. The major types of heart disease are atherosclerosis coronary, rheumatic congenital, ... angina and arrhythmia . Heart disease can arise from congenital defects, infection, narrowing of the coronary arteries, high blood pressure , or disturbances. The first stages of heart disease are lesions and cracks forming in the blood vessel walls normally at the points of highest pressure or stress (near the heart). The second stage is the body trying to repair itself by depositing fatty substances ( cholesterol , lipoproteins) inside the blood vessels to fill the cracks. Over time, without the proper body nutrient, vitamin C , to help keep the blood vessel walls from cracking and requiring constant repair, these fatty substances can begin to build up and clog the blood vessels causing stroke and heart attack.

Arianna Huffington, What will it take to create 20 million new jobs this year?
Arianna Huffington spoke eloquently at "Sol Fest 2010" in Ukiah, on Saturday, 8-26-10, of our crying social need to solve 3 key social problems: jobs, end the wars + jobs. The wind was blowing warm and yet it felt cool on that hot September day. Her call for jobs reminded me of Henry Fords search for a way to improve the economic balance in society so that every adult could afford to drive his Model-A Ford. This was the first mass produced car in the world. That made it the cheapest car in the world. Still, the workers who made his car, could not afford to drive his car. Something had to be done, so Ford could sell his car to the whole working class.
This was back in Henry Ford's day when the average work week was 60 hours long in the factories. Ford was mass producing the cheapest car ever made. Why? Because he wanted every worker to be able to drive a car. So when Ford saw a union picket line in Chicago demanding a 40 hour work week, Ford in his brilliant manner, instantly recognized another great idea that could help America, the way he helped put the American working class on wheels.

The heart, blood and blood vessels make up the system that supplies the body's tissues and organs with oxygen and nutrients. Oxygen-depleted blood comes from all parts of the body to the chambers on the right side of the heart. The blood is then pumped through the lungs, where oxygen is added to it. Oxygen-rich blood returns from the lungs to the left side of the heart and is pumped out, delivering oxygen to all the body's tissues.
