But heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S. It is also a major cause of disability. There are many different forms of heart disease. The most common cause of heart disease is narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries, the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart itself. This is called coronary artery disease and happens slowly over time. It's the major reason people have heart attacks Other kinds of heart problems may happen to the valves in the heart, or the heart may not pump well and cause heart failure . Some people are born with heart disease. You can help reduce your risk of heart disease by taking steps to control factors that put you at greater risk: NIH: National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute

Home Simple Français Good Food ... Index Tips on How to Have a Healthy Heart, How to Prevent Heart Disease. If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, what would it take to avoid a heart surgeon? How about a multivitamin / mineral pill and some omega-3 oil (canola-rapeseed, flax, fish)? Add a diet low in processed food and a good 'lifestyle' (don't smoke, control waist size, manage stress well, some exercise) and you will improve general health and help prevent heart disease. I know, it is normal to believe you're eating a good diet but there is mathematical certainty that even the best diet does not get you the vitamin levels that our bodies and genome developed on. Supplementation fixes this and is safe, cheap and, best of all: easy. This site looks at the food, supplement and prevention side of disease. I study nutrition in medicine as an independent researcher but it is not my job. This site doesn't generate money or sell anything. Below are highlights about the nutrients that prevent damage to your artery and bone structure and sometimes even cure it, and about those that can help you survive already existing artery damage.

Missouri Heart Disease Data: DHSS Heart Disease Data Profile Each year, heart disease accounts for more than 15,000 deaths in Missouri making heart disease the leading cause of death in the state. Heart disease is a term that includes several more specific heart conditions. The most common heart disease in the U.S. is coronary heart disease, which can lead to heart attack. What is HEART DISEASE? Coronary heart disease occurs when the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart, become hardened and narrowed due to buildup of plaque, called atherosclerosis. Plaque may also rupture and cause blood clots that block arteries. Coronary heart disease can lead to a heart attack. The most common sign of coronary heart disease is chest pain. Discomfort occurs when the heart is not getting enough blood. Over time, coronary heart disease can weaken the heart and lead to heart failure, a serious problem where the heart cannot pump blood the way that it should. Also, irregular heartbeats can develop. Doctors can perform several tests to assess coronary heart disease in persons who are at high risk.

MeSH Coronary artery disease (CAD or atherosclerotic heart disease ) is the end result of the accumulation of atheromatous plaques within the walls of the coronary arteries that supply the myocardium (the muscle of the heart ) with oxygen and nutrients. It is sometimes also called coronary heart disease (CHD), although CAD is the most common cause of CHD, it is not the only one. CAD is the leading cause of death worldwide. While the symptoms and signs of coronary artery disease are noted in the advanced state of disease, most individuals with coronary artery disease show no evidence of disease for decades as the disease progresses before the first onset of symptoms, often a "sudden" heart attack , finally arises. After decades of progression, some of these atheromatous plaques may rupture and (along with the activation of the blood clotting system) start limiting blood flow to the heart muscle . The disease is the most common cause of sudden death and is also the most common reason for death of men and women over 20 years of age.

    Angina and Heart Disease
    What is angina?
Angina (say: "ann-ji-na") is a squeezing pain or a pressing feeling in the chest. It is most often caused by blockages in the arteries that supply blood to your heart. This is called coronary artery disease, or heart disease. The symptoms you describe to your doctor will help your doctor decide if you need to be tested for heart disease. Your doctor will also check for any conditions that can increase your chance of heart disease. These conditions include:
    • high blood pressure diabetes smoking high cholesterol level menopause in women family members who have had heart disease at a young age
If you have heart disease, your angina can be treated by treating the heart disease.
