HaAqademia LaLashon Ha‘Ivrit Hebrew ‘Ivrit ) is a Semitic language of the Afro-Asiatic language family spoken by more than seven million people in Israel with significant communities in the West Bank , the United States , and Jewish communities around the world. The core of the Hebrew Bible (also known as the Tanakh) is the first five books of the Torah , which Judaism and Christianity traditionally hold to have been recorded in the time of Moses 13th century BCE. It is written in Classical Hebrew , and much of its present form is specifically in the dialect of Biblical Hebrew that scholars believe flourished roughly around the 6th century BCE, near the Babylonian Exile. In light of the Torah, Jews have called Hebrew Template:Ivrit the "language of Holiness" ( Lĕshôn Ha-Kôdesh ) since ancient times.

In Classical Hebrew, several consonants have a 'soft' (lenis) and 'hard' (fortis) pronounciation. Some Sephardic communities (Babylonian, Persian, Yemenite, etc.) do not differentiate between the 'hard' and 'soft' beyt ('b' and 'v'), pronouncing both as 'b'. However, these communities often do differentiate the 'hard' and 'soft' gimmel ('g' and 'gh'), kof ('k' and 'kh'), peh ('p' and 'f'), and tav ('t' and 'th'). Some even sound the 'hard' and 'soft' daleth ('d' and 'dh').

HEBREW LANGUAGE. The name " Hebrew " is derived, through the Greek `E$3paios, from `ibhray, the Aramaic equivalent of the Old Testament word `ibhri, denoting the people who commonly spoke of themselves as Israel or Children of Israel from the name of their common ancestor (see JEws ). The later derivative Yisra'eli, Israelite, from Yisra'el, is not found in the Old Testament. 2 Other names used for the language of Israel are speech of Canaan (Isa. xix. 18) and Yehudhith, Jewish, (2 Kings xviii. 26). In later times it was called the holy tongue. The real meaning of the word `ibhri must ultimately be sought in the root `abhar, to pass across, to go beyond, from which is derived the noun `ebher, meaning the " farther bank " of a river. The usual explanation of the term is that of Jewish tradition There were several journals of this name, the best known of the others being that edited by Lemaire. Z In 2 Sam. xvii. 25 Israelite should be Ishmaelite, as in the parallel passage 1 Chron. ii. 17. that `ibhri means the man " from the other side,"
