43. Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Hedgehogs
Includes facts and information about species related to them.

Paper Scissors Clocks presents:
Everything you always wanted to know about HEDGEHOGS Hedgehogs are insectivores. They are not related to porcupines. Unlike other insectivores (such as shrews), hedgehogs have large eyes, which gives them a "cute and cuddly" appearance. Hedgehogs have poor eyesight, but a keen sense of smell. A hedgehog's quills do not come out. Insectivores evolved during the late Cretaceous period about 100 million years ago. Insectivores were the first placental mammals to nourish their offspring inside the body of the female. Human beings are direct descendents of these primitive beady-eyed bug-eating animals. Other famous insectivores include both shrews and moles, and the hedgehog's kissing cousin the spiny tenrec of Madagascar. Hedgehogs are members of the family Eurincidae, which also includes the garlic- scented Moon Rat of Southeast Asia. At one- and-a-half feet long, Moon Rats are the largest living insectivores. Hedgehogs are nocturnal, coming out at night to feed on insects, worms, snails, birds' eggs, and small vertebrates like frogs and snakes. They are often found in garbage dumps, or in close-proximity to human homes. Hedgehogs are solitary animals, who rarely come together except to mate (although they occasionally gather in places where there is an abundant source of food).

Contains a long article on this animal.

Cyprus Hedgehog The hedgehog is the only mammal with thorns that exists in Cyprus. It is a very cute animal found in gardens, around fences and in prairies.
It has been known for centuries and therefore it is connected with many legends and proverbs.
Beetles, larvae, worms, snails, eggs of small birds and snakes are its food. The latter is its favourite food. It hunts it cleverly. Once it sees the snake , it runs towards it and bites the snake's tail. Then it immediately shrinks and becomes a thorny ball. Then the snake attacks the hedgehog with its head to force it to leave. Beating the thorns, however, is lethal for the snake. It is wounded, and after a while it dies from bleeding. The hedgehog then starts "unfolding" and eats the snake. It is particularly strange how the hedgehog "invites" many other hedgehogs to eat together. They eat the snake apart from its head.
During winter-time, the hedgehog hibernates and feeds on the fat that it had gained during summer. It starts giving birth in April, as soon as it comes out of hibernation. Most of the young hedgehogs are born in early summer. However, births take place also during September, when the young ones of the first birt do not survive. Young hedgehogs of the second birth rarely survive in winter. When the mother is disturbed in her nest, she either abandons her

Physical Characteristics "Small enough to fit in your hands but too prickly to hold" is a good description of the hedgehog. Though small, it is by no means defenseless. Thousands of stiff, sharp spines-harder and sharper than those of a porcupine-cover the animal's back and sides, like a pincushion filled with needles. Even though spines, or quills, provide the hedgehog with effective protection, the animal's most striking characteristic is its practice of curling up into a tight ball, with its spines sticking out in all directions. When the hedgehog rolls up, a special, highly developed circular muscle that runs along the sides of the body and across the rump and neck contracts and forms a "bag" into which the body, head and legs are folded. The hedgehog curls up if disturbed or frightened-only the strongest predators, such as the badger, can pry it open. It also sleeps in this position, so is rarely caught unprotected. ^ Back to top Habitat Hedgehogs inhabit a wide range across a variety of climates and terrains in East Africa. Although not found in the Americas, other species of hedgehogs live in different parts of Africa, Europe and Asia, as well as in New Zealand, where they have been introduced. Their distribution on the different continents is, however, very local. They must have dry shelters on well-drained soil and a good supply of ground-dwelling insects and other invertebrates. Suburban Nairobi meets these habitat conditions, where hedgehogs are reported to be abundant.

I am a big fan of Sega's "Sonic the Hedgehog" computer and video games, especially the early 1990's 16-bit versions (the original Sonic game appeared in 1991). Below are some images of Sonic, his friends and foes (including 55 animated GIFs), plus some MP3 music and free Flash online arcade games. This page may take a while to load due to the large number of files it contains, but hopefully you will find it worth waiting for...
