MeSH Hepatitis (plural hepatitides ) is an inflammation of the liver characterized by the presence of inflammatory cells in the tissue of the organ. The name is from the Greek hepar (ἧπαρ), the root being hepat - (ἡπατ-), meaning liver , and suffix -itis , meaning "inflammation" (c. 1727). The condition can be self-limiting (healing on its own) or can progress to fibrosis (scarring) and cirrhosis Hepatitis may occur with limited or no symptoms, but often leads to jaundice anorexia (poor appetite) and malaise . Hepatitis is acute when it lasts less than six months and chronic when it persists longer. A group of viruses known as the hepatitis viruses cause most cases of hepatitis worldwide, but it can also be due to toxins (notably alcohol , certain medications and plants), other infections and autoimmune diseases.

Hepatitis B Vaccine
What Is the Hepatitis B Vaccine, and How Effective Is It?
The hepatitis B vaccine contains a protein (antigen) that stimulates the body to make protective antibodies. Examples of hepatitis B vaccines available in the United States include hepatitis b vaccine-injection (Engerix-B, Recombivax-HB). Three doses (given at 0, 1, and 6 months of age) are necessary to assure protection. There are also combination vaccines on the market that provide protection against hepatitis B and other diseases.

In medicine hepatitis is any disease featuring inflammation of the liver. Two of the viruses that cause hepatitis (hepatitis A and E) can be transmitted through water, food and from person to person. Hygiene is therefore important in their control. The illness starts with an abrupt onset of fever, body weakness, loss of appetite, nausea and abdominal discomfort, followed by jaundice within a few days. The disease may range from mild (lasing 1-2 weeks) to severe disabling disease (lasting several months). Both hepatitis A and E are found worldwide. Hepatitis A is particularly frequent in countries with poor sanitary and hygienic conditions (in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America). Countries with economies in transition and some regions of industrialized countries where sanitary conditions are sub-standard are also high affected (southern and eastern Europe and some parts of the Middle East). We all know the symptoms of common problems, such as sunburned skin and overworked muscles, but what about symptoms of the liver? How does the liver say that something is wrong? The liver has a big job in keeping the body healthy, and if it has a problem, sometimes it can make a lot of noise, or better yet, color. Symptoms of Acute Viral Hepatitis
    Jaundice
A well-known sign of hepatitis is jaundice, which is an accumulation of a chemical called "bilirubin" in the body's tissues. The liver usually processes this chemical as a waste product, but when the liver is damaged, it's unable to do its normal job. The chemical then accumulates in the blood and starts to leak out in to nearby tissue. When enough of this chemical accumulates, it's possible to see a yellow color in the skin, urine and especially around the whites of the eyes. Though this is a very obvious sign, there are other more common signs and symptoms of hepatitis in the liver.

    Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B
'Hepatitis' refers to viral infections that cause inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis A, B and C are the most common types. Each have different causes and symptoms.
    Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is the most common of the seven known types of viral hepatitis. Infection with the hepatitis A virus leads to inflammation of the liver, but complications are rarely serious.
    How hepatitis A is spread
The hepatitis A virus (HAV) is found in the faeces of someone infected with the virus. It only takes a tiny amount of faeces getting inside another person’s mouth to cause hepatitis A infection. Personal hygiene, such as careful hand washing, can minimise the risk of the virus being passed on. HAV is a common infection in many parts of the world where sanitation and sewage infrastructure is poor. Often people become infected with HAV by eating or drinking contaminated food or water. Hepatitis A is also classed as a sexually transmitted disease (STD) because it can be passed on sexually, particularly during activities such as anilingus (rimming). The washing of genital and anal areas before
