zSB(3,3) Here is a list of symptoms associated with acute viral hepatitis. Because they are broad and varied, it is helpful to view these symptoms as happening in stages. Many doctors organize them into three groups or stages: Beginning, Later and Recovery. For more information on this, see Viral Hepatitis Symptoms The symptoms of acute viral hepatitis are often the same regardless of the virus that causes it. This means that diagnosis of a particular kind of viral hepatitis can't be made from the symptoms alone. For this, you need a physician and laboratory blood tests.

Preventing Hepatitis You Can Prevent Hepatitis
Here's what you can do to prevent or reduce your chances of getting hepatitis:
Preventing Hepatitis A (HAV) Vaccinate. Immunization of children (1-18 years of age) consists of 2 or 3 doses of the vaccine. Adults need a booster dose 6-12 months following the initial dose of vaccine. The vaccine is thought to be effective for 15 - 20 years or more. Vaccines to prevent HAV infection prior to exposure provide protection against the virus as early as 2 - 4 weeks after vaccination.
Other people who should be vaccinated include: Users of illegal injected drugs. Restaurant workers and food handlers.

    Hepatitis A
What is hepatitis A and how could I get it? What are some of the symptoms? Most patients suffer flu-like symptoms including weakness, headache and fever. Other symptoms may include stomach cramps, diarrhea and jaundice, which is yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes. These symptoms can last for several weeks and hospitalization may be required. Why should I be concerned about getting hepatitis A while travelling? Canadians are travelling more, on both business and pleasure, to destinations such as Africa, Asia, Latin America and eastern Europe. Hepatitis A outbreaks may occur in these areas due to inadequate sewage and water purification systems. Some of our favourite vacation destinations like Mexico and the Caribbean are also regions where hepatitis A is more common. If you plan on travelling to a high risk area or think you may come in contact with someone who has, you may be vulnerable and should take steps to avoid exposure.

    What causes hepatitis?
There are many causes of inflammation of the liver including medication side effects, excessive alcohol, some toxic chemicals, disorders of the gall bladder or pancreas, and infections. There are many infective agents that can cause inflammation of the liver, or hepatitis, however the term is unfortunately commonly used to refer to a particular group of
viruses identified not very imaginatively by letters of the alphabet. A person can develop hepatitis if they contract one of the viruses that can cause liver inflammation, or as a result of exposure to substances that can cause hepatitis - alcohol, fungal toxins and certain medicines. There are two ways in which medicines can lead to hepatitis: it can either occur as a result of medicine poisoning through overdoses of a medicine (eg paracetamol), or it can occur as a result of an abnormal reaction of the liver to a normal dose (eg halothane, the anaesthetic). Fortunately, the latter type of hepatitis is rare. Autoimmune chronic hepatitis accounts for about 20% of all chronic hepatitis cases. Like other autoimmune disorders, this condition develops because a genetically defective immune system attacks the body's own cells and organs, in this case, the liver, after being triggered by an environmental agent, probably a virus. Suspects include the measles virus, a hepatitis virus, or the Epstein-Barr virus, which causes mononucleosis. It is also possible that a reaction to a drug or other toxin that affects the liver also triggers an autoimmune response in susceptible individuals. In about 30% of cases, autoimmune hepatitis is associated with other disorders that involve autoimmune attacks on other parts of the body.
