HERB GARDENING
By Trey Pitsenberger, co-owner Golden Gecko
If you enjoy cooking and gardening, I have got some great advice that will have an exciting impact on your garden beds and kitchen table. I have found that many gardeners are missing out on maximizing their harvests and the pleasures they can enjoy from a successful herb garden. One fundamental for growing basil, cilantro and dill is to plant three times a year. Too many gardeners plant just once in spring. Like other plants, these herbs (and others like them) have a growing cycle. When they begin to flower (or bolt) the plant has begun focusing energy on producing flowers and seeds, and not the leaves you are after. Try planting in April, June and during July or August. In this way, you can add 2-3 more months of fresh herbs to their tables. Finally, to store fresh herbs, make sure the leaves are not moist and put them in an airtight plastic bag with some air, which will provide a cushion.

May 15, 2010 By admin Leave a Comment Herb gardening is a great way to make use of a small planting area. Herbs are very easy to grow and can be a fun hobby for anyone interested in gardening, but only have a limited amount of space. Once you find an area for your small garden, the next step is to decide what kind of herbs you want to grow. There are four basic types of herbs: Herbs used for fragrance.
    Herbs used for cooking.
    Herbs used for decoration.
    Herbs used for homeopathic purposes.
Each herb has it’s own individuality, some herbs may grow at certain times of the year and need a different type of care than others. Some are perennial plants that come back every year, and some need to be replanted each year. Certain herbs will need more exposure to the sun while others need shade. It’s best to research your options before starting an herb garden for extra know-how.
Cooking herbs are better grown when started indoors, and when ready are placed outside.
Herbs need room to grow so use a spacious planter with plenty of fertilized soil to aid in plant growth.

Growing organic vegetables in your vegetable garden allows you to control everything naturally.  Vegetable gardening in your backyard allows you to pick your own vegetables just in time for a freshness and peak flavor that can't be beat.  Whether you're an accomplished green thumb or a very green novice, whether you have several acres of land, or only a small patch to cultivate, delicious nutritional vegetables are as close as your backyard. Start planning your very own organic vegetable garden today!  Although many gardeners don't initially realize it, they already have space that can easily be converted into an attractive and surprisingly productive vegetable garden.  If appearance bothers you, why not enclose the vegetable garden area with a small neat hedge of herbs?  Rosemary thyme sage , and marjoram would be particularly appealing and appropriate around your vegetables, in addition to their culinary value.  Some gardeners surround the vegetable garden with low growing annuals which can be decorative and useful at the same time, marigolds for instance are known to repel nematodes (the root damaging eelworms).  Many vegetables have attractive leaves, and can appear quite appealing among your flower garden.

Things To Know About Herb Gardening
There are important things to know about herb gardening that will surely give you the opportunity to succeed in this area. Whether you are planning for container herb gardening; indoor herb-gardening , or the other type, you need to establish an effective herb gardening management so that all you desire will be attainable.
You may not know it, herb-gardening, indoor herb gardening is becoming more and more popular and one of the reasons for that is its practical value. Why? Aside from its uses in kitchen, herb garden also offers a decorative view that flowering plants can do. In other words, herb garden serves for a double purpose.
Another essential part of herb gardening, whether an indoor herb gardening or container herb-gardening is that, you can dry herbs so that they can be used during winter or off-season. To have this done, you may cut, wash, and hang up-as the process of preservation. Then, after a couple of weeks, you can put them in a jar after drying in an oven. Though this can be laborious in your part, proper herb gardening management can make it simpler for this procedure.
One of the most planted in herb-gardening is Basil. This offer a decorative view like ornamental flowers and also can be used in your kitchen. Specifically, this can be added to tomato juice and paste to add flavor

An herb garden can be a place of enchantment on a summers day. You can watch the hummingbirds feeding on the bright-red bergamot flowers, bees sipping nectar from the pale pink thyme blossoms, inhale the fragrance of mints and lavender and delight in the butterflies dancing around the echinacea. These were the simple pleasures that my visitors saw that enticed them enough to start their own herb garden. Then they are hooked when I showed them the many other rewards of herb gardening. The herbal wreath on my front door, the dried herb arrangements scattered around our home, the assorted herbal vinegars lined up across the kitchen counter, the way my sheets smell of lavender from the linen closet, not to mention the fresh herbs I use in my cooking.

If we don't know, we have a circle of friends who may be able to help! Herb Gardening is perfect for the beginning gardener and the experienced. Herbs need very little special care and they resist disease and pests naturally. In fact some herbs when brushed up against or rubbed on your skin can keep mosquitoes away. But more about that some other time. Herb Gardens are as varied as the personalities of their gardeners. From traditional knot gardens to wild and wonderful natural landscapes. In fact the hardest part of herb gardening may be choosing the style and the kinds of herbs you want to plant. Do you want a formal herb garden with a path and garden art, or maybe you want to start off with just some large pots of herbs near the kitchen door?

    Starting an Herb Garden
Herbs can be grown indoors or outdoors. Indoors has the advantage of a year-long growing season, as well as, ease of use (no heading outside to weed!). The disadvantage of indoor grown herbs , is that they are generally less productive and less flavorful. Of course, the opposite is true for plants grown outside more work, but higher yields and, generally, more flavor.
Whether you choose the great outdoors or the window sill in your kitchen, the needs of your herbs are the same: plenty of sunshine and good, well-draining soil.
    Indoors
Start by choosing your herb growing spot. Window sills are great, particularly those that face south or west. In the winter, you may need to supplement natural light with grow lights or other plant lights to keep your herbs humming along (see Bring in the Herbs A good growing medium for herbs grown in pots is a soiless mixture of peat, vermiculite and perlite. Add a cup of ground limestone per bushel of soil or about one teaspoon per five-inch pot to keep the soil non-acidic. Learn about the physical characteristics of growing mixes here.

Dear Herb Gardener: Hi and . Welcome to HerbGardeningWorld.com. My name is Annie Andrews. I've always loved gardening, however there are certain areas of gardening that I have a real full blown passion for. One is growing roses and another is my herb garden, all full of beautifully fragrant and flavorsome herbs. Growing my own herbs is something I have been doing for quite a few years now. I simply can't get enough of that warm glow and feeling of satisfaction I always get when I pick some of my own fresh herbs straight out of the garden and use them to prepare a beautiful healthy meal packed full of flavor nutrition. And all done with natural, home grown herbs because I never use horirble chemicals. All done with herbs I nutured in my very own garden and all at a fraction of the price it would cost me to go to the store and buy them. That's got to feel good, hasn't it? Over the years I've been growing and enjoying my herb gardening, I've acquired a huge amount of knowledge and experience about how to grow and care for heathly and beautifully fragrant herbs. How to make sure nothing is left to chance and therefore ensuring the herbs grow as easily, as healthy and as smoothly as possible!
