Assembling a Seed Herbarium
Containers for the Seed Specimens
It's now time to put the herbarium together. We have our identified and collected specimens. The first question is: what are we going to put them in? We need containers and an arrangement that makes this a working collection that can be used for our identification and comparison purposes. Herbariums vary from the simple and inexpensive to the elaborate. They can be as simple as consisting of paper coin envelopes in a shoebox. The paper coin envelopes can have the identification of the specimen and other identifying characteristics written on them. These can be arranged by family, then genera, and species within the shoebox. A couple of drawbacks to this method is that the seeds must be taken out to be observed and the paper envelopes can be breeched by insects that will eat the seed. One can take this a step further and place the seed in plastic, "ziplock" coin envelopes. These allow for observation without removing the seed. The coin envelopes can then be attached to a note card which will contain the identity and characteristics of the seed. Both of these methods have the advantage of taking up little space.

What is a Herbarium? Herbaria are museums which house pressed, mounted and labeled plant specimens. These specimens and their labels provide knowledge of plant species, plant variation, plant names, ethnobotanical information, genetic information and plant locations. Herbaria are utilized in teaching and research. While they may be very large, housing millions of specimens from around the world, local herbaria play very important roles in their communities.
How Can The Cochise County Herbarium Help You? The sky islands and San Pedro River contribute to the unique habitats found in Cochise County. The CCH records and is a repository for plant species from these areas, reflecting the variation and diversity present in Cochise County and surrounding areas. It is a place where the general public, as well as professionals, can find information specific to the area regarding:
  • Plant Identification
  • Habitat
  • Phenology
  • Range
  • Ethnobotanical Information
  • Plant Resources
Those who may find the CCH a valuable resource include:
  • Research botanists who use herbariums to conduct research on plants, discover and describe new species, inventory plants in specific areas and document species that belong to particular groups (eg. cacti, ocotillo, etc.)

This project is run under the umbrella of " Biodiversity Resources in Belgium " (a project of the Belgian Federal Office for Scientific, Technical and Cultural affairs ). It aims at developing a prototype of a computerized catalogue of nomenclatural types linked with digitized images on the internet. The nomenclatural types in the National Botanic Garden (BR) (see departement vascular plants and history of the herbarium S.P. ) belong to the most important biodiversity collections in Belgium.
This project follows a new policy of the herbarium that wants to give rapidly and electronically available information of specimens of the herbarium.
On the long term, the National Botanic Garden of Belgium wants to develop an information system with regard to the ca. 25,000 nomenclatural types kept in its collections.
Coffee and false coffee have been chosen for the prototype because they reflect the tropical African taxonomic interest of the National Botanic Garden of Belgium (BR). The genera of coffee and false coffee have recently been revised, mostly at BR (see

Weed identification resources
Environmental weeds can cause substantial damage to natural ecosystems, but it's not always easy to tell when a plant is a weed. If your garden seems to be 'going bush' or you've noticed a plant that seems out of place or that's dominating a natural habitat, you can use these resources to identify a weed and find out if it is a weed in your area. Remember that Australian native plants can become weeds outside their native range too. Plants that are native to your area may be listed as weeds on websites from other parts of the world, so make sure you find out the native range of plant before treating it as a weed.
Websites
As a starting point, many of these online resources have good quality photos and list plants by common and scientific names. You could also enter a plant name into your favourite internet search engine to find information or images.

Seed Identification
and How to Identify Seeds
Seed Identification can be both a science and an art. Some seed scientists use "seed keys" to identify seeds, others visualization, and most use both depending upon what experience they have in the field and what they are trying to identify. Unfortunately, only the most common agricultural and weed seeds have been described, drawn, or photographed. This makes identifying less common seeds harder.
Seed Identification: the Basics
No matter how you are going to identify seeds, there are some important characteristics that you have to view to come to the identity of any seed species.
  • Size Shape Texture Color
When it comes to size, you need to look at overall size of the seed and then the size of each of the seed's individual parts. The same is true of shape and texture. What is the overall shape? What is the shape of each of the individual parts. Does the seed have an overall texture and what is it? Do any of the individual parts have a texture of their own?

edit Specimen preservation
Preparing a plant for mounting To preserve their form and color, plants collected in the field are spread flat on sheets of newsprint and dried, usually in a plant press, between blotters or absorbent paper. The specimens, which are then mounted on sheets of stiff white paper, are labeled with all essential data, such as date and place found, description of the plant, altitude, and special habitat conditions. The sheet is then placed in a protective case. As a precaution against insect attack, the pressed plant is frozen or poisoned and the case disinfected.
