Preventing obesity and smoking can save lives, but it doesn't save money, researchers reported Monday.
It costs more to care for healthy people who live years longer, according to a Dutch study that counters the common perception that preventing obesity would save governments millions of dollars.
"It was a small surprise," said Pieter van Baal, an economist at the Netherlands' National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, who led the study. "But it also makes sense. If you live longer, then you cost the health system more."
In a paper published online Monday in the Public Library of Science Medicine journal, Dutch researchers found that the health costs of thin and healthy people in adulthood are more expensive than those of either fat people or smokers.
Van Baal and colleagues created a model to simulate lifetime health costs for three groups of 1,000 people: the "healthy-living" group (thin and non-smoking), obese people, and smokers. The model relied on "cost of illness" data and disease prevalence in the Netherlands in 2003.
The researchers found that from age 20 to 56, obese people racked up the most expensive health costs. But because both the smokers and the obese people died sooner than the healthy group, it cost less to treat them in the long run.

The American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta (AABGA) - http://www.aabga.org/ The American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta (AABGA) was founded in 1940 by a small group of botanical garden directors. Operated initially on a volunteer basis, AABGA acquired part-time professional staff in 1972 and full-time staff in 1981.
AABGA's mission is to support North American botanical gardens and arboreta in fulfilling their missions to study, display, and conserve living plant collections for public benefit. Support for this mission comes in many forms: a quarterly magazine, a monthly newsletter, special publications, and programming at annual and regional meetings. To encourage gardens to develop internship programs for young people, AABGA publishes and distributes an annual listing of more than 500 internships. The Healing Power of Flowers
The Healing Powers of Flower Essences
By Isha Lerner
The Elders have asked that the morning after every full moon at 10:00 AM that we gather and that we go outside and we look to the Sun, to the flowers, and to the heart of the earth...In doing so we bring more solar energy and flower wisdom to the earth, because the next age is the Age of Flowers. Flowers are our medicine for the next age.
Ven. Dhyana Ywahoo
What are Flower Essences and how do they work?
A Flower Essence is a living energetic medicine made from the biological imprint of the living plant's vibrations in water. The Flower Essences are created and preserved in pure spring water and brandy, and taken orally under the tongue or applied to the body. When a person places a few drops of a flower's essence under the tongue, the energy of the flower, vibrating at its own special frequencies, floods one's aura. The flower's vibrations are now within the body/aura's vibrations and the flower's vibrations will harmonize the body/aura vibrations to its own special harmonies, with the help of the flower's signature vibrations. Flower Essences are a fascinating and powerful way to work with plants for healing. Flower Essences contain an absolute minimum of biological or chemical material, offering one the sacred energies of the flower's essences in vibrations imprinted within the water/brandy mixture. Working with herbs themselves, as extracts of various kinds or as food sources, uses the biological and chemical components of the herbs as well as their vital energies. Aromatherapy uses a particular set of the chemicals present in plants and also engages their energies.

Pain Control
People experiencing pain or Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) may be preoccupied and unable to focus - even on methods of pain control. This article offers ways for making a "resourceful space" for coaching people in pain to solve their challenges and achieve their goals. The methods on this page can provide short-term pain relief. Long-term Pain Relief Pain relief has a high priority in systemic coaching. Unrelieved pain allows undue suffering, and the physical and psychological effect of pain can be devastating, with consequences of diminished activity, appetite, and sleep, and a general weakening. Pain relief also helps decrease anxiety before and after surgery, or following some crisis or emergency situation. Common ways to relieve pain are to use pharmaceutical or herbal medications, or self-medications such as alcohol and nicotine. Salicylate drugs such as aspirin and acetaminophen are probably the most commonly used. Opiates such as morphine and heroin are stronger (and similar to the endorphins that a human body creates). Opiates require medical prescription and supervision, but due to the psychoactive effects of opiates, people taking them may not be candidates for Soulwork coaching.

  • graduate girl image by Maria Bell from Fotolia.com Not all on line naturopathy degrees offer a diploma. There are a number of options for on line naturopathy training. Undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate degrees are available through on line training. Certificate and continuing education hours for medical and alternative medical practitioners are also available on line. There are disadvantages to on line degrees. They lack the prestige and respect of regular classroom education at a residential university or college . They may not be accepted for some state licensing requirements. Finally, on line training often offers no practicum under the tutelage of a licensed practitioner. Any hands-on learning becomes the responsibility of the student.
