Another common hernia involves the spinal discs and causes sciatica Herniae may or may not present either with pain at the site, a visible or palpable lump, or in some cases by more vague symptoms resulting from pressure on an organ which has become "stuck" in the hernia, sometimes leading to organ dysfunction. Fatty tissue usually enters a hernia first, but it may be followed by or accompanied by an organ. Most of the time, herniae develop when pressure in the compartment of the residing organ is increased, and the boundary is weak or weakened.

The Different Types of Hernias Author: Benjamin C. Wedro, MD, FAEEM
Editor: No matter what you make or build, it's the seams that are the hardest part to get right. On a piece of clothing, a loose seam will be prone to tear; make it too tight and it will restrict movement. On a house, that loose board will cause the roof to leak, and if there isn't enough room for expansion, stuff will start to buckle. As it turns out, the body has numerous seams that need to be made just right so that they don't pull apart and let body parts slide into places they don't belong. The abdomen is surrounded by numerous muscles to keep the stomach, small intestine, and colon where they belong, but if one of these organs starts to slip though a weakness or a hole in the muscles, it's called a hernia. To be fair, many other parts of the body can have organ herniation. By definition, a hernia is a bulge or protrusion of an organ through a muscle or other structure that normally serves to keep it contained. But when people talk about hernias, they are usually talking about the abdomen. And while there are many types of abdominal hernias (

If it’s above the belt, you may have a ventral or abdominal hernia Ventral or abdominal hernias occur when the intestine pushes through a weakening in the abdominal wall. They are frequently referred to as incisional hernias because the bulge often occurs at the site of a previous surgical incision.

If it’s around your belly button, you may have an umbilical hernia Umbilical hernias occur around the navel and are common in women during or after pregnancy. They are often referred to as "outies".

Hernias are common. They can affect men, women and children. A combination of muscle weakness and straining, such as with heavy lifting, might contribute. Some people are born with weak abdominal muscles and may be more likely to get a hernia. The usual treatment for a hernia is surgery to repair the opening in the muscle wall. Untreated hernias can cause pain and health problems. A hernia occurs when part of an internal organ bulges through a weak area of muscle. Most hernias occur in the abdomen. NAHI Philosophy:
The Institute's purpose is to provide excellence in patient hernia repair at a minimal expense to the insurance carrier and the patient. This philosophy evolved through 28 years of experience and success utilizing specialized polypropylene mesh. Our friendly rapport with our patients and with insurance companies has allowed us to grow to become a center of excellence in hernia repair.
From one center, we have expanded to multiple locations throughout California. We have enlarged our staff by selecting Board Certified Surgeons with interest in the advance of hernia repair techniques. Working with local outpatient centers and hospitals, these surgeons were trained, observed by N.A.H.I. staff, and then qualified to join the Institute. Our present hernia repair has evolved over many years into a straight forward outpatient mesh reinforced herniorrhaphy.
Both general and local anesthesia can be used depending on the patient's health and preference. The patient may return to modified activity within 7 to 10 days and to normal and customary activity within 14 to 24 days. The insurance company quoted recurrence rate of 10% to 12% stimulated our efforts in combining the Shouldice technique with polypropylene mesh, thereby reducing our recurrence rate to less than 1/2%. We have also consolidated all costs of a hernia repair into one bill issued with a Lifetime Warranty for primary repairs.

From the North Penn Hernia Institute Hernia Symptoms can include:
    • Bulge or swelling
    • Pain
      BULGE
Hernias are, by definition, a defect in the muscle container of the abdominal wall. That is, they are a gap, hole or defect in the abdominal wall. As a result of this hole or defect, the contents of the abdominal cavity, such as intestine, fat and other organs, may tend to be push through this hole by the normal pressure that occurs within the abdomen. As this material pushes through the hernia defect, a bulge or localized area of swelling will become evident beneath the skin of the abdominal wall. Since there are many Types of hernias, the site of this bulge will vary according to the type of hernia and location of the hole or defect. With activity such as exercise, coughing, lifting and straining etc., the pressure within the abdomen increases. As a result, more abdominal contents tend to push through the hernia defect, and the bulge gradually increases in size.
      PAIN
Pain occurs from hernias for several reasons, and can and does often vary in character (sharp, dull, burning etc.) and severity from patient to patient. Pain can occur because the tissue at and around the hole is being stretched or torn and therefor in some fashion damaged. This usually will cause pain directly at the site of the hernia and is

        Definition
A hernia is usually a sac formed by the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum). The sac comes through a hole or weak area in the fascia, the strong layer of the abdominal wall that surrounds the muscle. The types of hernias are based on where they occur:
        • Inguinal hernia appears as a bulge in the groin. This type is more common in men than women. The bulge may go all the way down into the scrotum. Femoral hernia appears as a bulge in the upper thigh. This type is more common in women than men. Incisional hernia can occur through a scar if you have had abdominal surgery in the past. Umbilical hernia appears as a bulge around the belly button. It occurs when the muscle around the navel doesn't close completely.
