Hernia symptoms classified by their position on the body:
Inguinal hernia symptoms are protrusions of abdominal cavity contents through the inguinal canal. They are very common and their repair is one of the most frequently performed surgical operations. Femoral hernias occur just below the inguinal ligament when abdominal contents pass through a naturally occurring weakness called the femoral canal. The incidence of strangulation in femoral hernias is high. Umbilical hernias involve protrusion of abdominal contents through a weakness at the site of passage of the umbilical cord through the abdominal wall. These hernias often resolve spontaneously. An incisional hernia occurs when the defect is the result of an incompletely healed surgical wound. When these occur in median laparotomy incisions in the linea alba, they are termed ventral hernias. These can be the most frustrating and difficult to treat, as the repair utilizes already attenuated tissue. Diaphragmatic hernias result when part of the stomach or intestine protrudes into the chest cavity through a defect in the diaphragm.

Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair ABOUT YOUR HERNIA AND LAPAROSCOPIC REPAIR: Approximately 600,000 hernia repair operations are performed annually in the United States. Many are performed by the conventional "open" method. Some hernia repairs are performed using a small telescope known as a laparoscope. If your surgeon has recommended a laparoscopic repair, this brochure can help you understand what a hernia is and about the treatment. WHAT IS A HERNIA?
  • A hernia occurs when the inside layers of the abdominal muscle have weakened, resulting in a bulge or tear. In the same way that an inner tube pushes through a damaged tire, the inner lining of the abdomen pushes through the weakened area of the abdominal wall to form a small balloon-like sac. This can allow a loop of intestine or abdominal tissue to push into the sac. The hernia can cause severe pain and other potentially serious problems that could require emergency surgery. Both men and women can get a hernia.

Encyclopedia of Medicine Apr 06, 2001 by Joyce Susan Siok
Hernia is a general term used to describe a bulge or protrusion of an organ through the structure or muscle that usually contains it. There are many different types of hernias. The most familiar type are those that occur in the abdomen, in which part of the intestines protrude through the abdominal wall. This may occur in different areas and, depending on the location, the hernia is given a different name. An inguinal hernia appears as a bulge in the groin and may come and go depending on the position of the person or their level of physical activity. It can occur with or without pain. In men, the protrusion may descend into the scrotum. Inguinal hernias account for 80% of all hernias and are more common in men. Femoral hernias are similar to inguinal hernias but appear as a bulge slightly lower. They are more common in women due to the strain of pregnancy.

WHAT IS A HERNIA? A hernia is the protrusion of a tissue or part of an organ through the body's muscular tissue. Hernias frequently begin in the abdomen, after a weakness in the abdominal wall evolves into a defect through which the abdominal organs may protrude. Another common hernia involves the intervertebral disc, causing serious back pain. Hernias may present themselves either by pain at the site, a visible lump, or in more vague symptoms resulting from pressure on an organ which has become stuck in the hernia and sometimes leads to organ dysfunction. Generally, it is advisable for a hernia sufferer to receive prompt treatment. Usually, with an abdominal hernia, surgery is practicable, and recovery is not extensive. It is essential, however, that the sufferer does not aggravate the hernia with extensive manual labor. An individual with a hernia should not undertake any unnecessary lifting, because doing so might well aggravate the hernia. WAYS IN WHICH YOU MIGHT BE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST BECAUSE OF A HERNIA
      • Your employer does not allow you to miss work for medical appointments Your employer does not accommodate your need to take a reasonable amount of time off of work Your employer will not provide reasonable on-site accommodations for your disability Your employer doesn't accommodate your need to refrain from heavy lifting or manual labor

Complete information on hernia location and hernia types INGUINAL HERNIAS I NGUINAL or 'groin' hernias are by far the most common site for hernias to develop in adults, and are second only to Umbilical Hernias in infants and children. While a bit more common in men, they do occur in women as well. These hernias will develop as the result of a weakness, tear, gap or opening in the muscle wall of the lower abdomen or groin, in a region called the Myopectineal Orifice . As a result, the contents of the abdomen, such as intestine, may protrude through the opening creating a pain and a bulge. The pain and bulge may be constant, or intermittent in duration. Inguinal Hernias are located in the lower abdomen (right side, left side or both), just above the leg crease, near or adjacent to the pubic area. Inguinal Hernias can occur on both sides ('Bilateral') in about 8-10% of patients.

Hernia Recovery Undergoing hernia surgery is a daunting prospect, not just for the actual surgical procedure itself, but for the recovery period up ahead. As much as you make necessary preparations for your surgery, you also need to take certain measures post-surgery to facilitate in faster hernia operation recovery. Adequate knowledge on what is involved in your surgery and what to expect following it will enable you to deal with the situation more effectively.
Hernia occurs when a protrusion of tissue takes place through a membrane. And because of that, this can be quite a painful predicament due to the weakening or tear on the muscle wall of a specific body structure.
Therefore, hernia surgery involves pushing back the body structure into the herniated opening. The use of surgical techniques help to reinforce your membrane and regain normal function.
Hernia recovery times typically range from 1 or 2 weeks following the date of your operation. But the hernia operation recovery period depends on specific type of mesh used by your surgeon to correct your herniated membrane.
As part of your recovery efforts, you need to take note of a few limitations to your daily activities to avoid worsening your condition or going back to your hernia problems. One practical tip to consider is to avoid lifting heavy weights or putting too much strain on specific area of the body affected by hernia.

There are two categories of hiatal hernias, sliding and para-esophageal Sliding hiatal hernias are those in which the gastro-esophageal junction and part of the stomach slides into the chest. This junction can stay permanently in the chest, or just slide into the chest during swallowing. The later results because with each swallow, the esophagus contracts, causing the esophagus to shorten and pull on the stomach. After the swallow, the junction falls back into the abdomen. Approximately 90% of all hiatal hernias are the sliding type. With para-esophageal hernias , the gastro-esophageal junction remains where it belongs, but part of the stomach is squeezed up into the chest beside the esophagus. These hernias remain in the chest at all times. With this type of hernia, complications can occur, such as incarceration and strangulation. Incarceration means the hernia is stuck and being squeezed. Strangulation results from teh lack of blood supply, leading to death ofthe tissues involved, when incarceration persists too long. Surgical intervention is required.

Laparoscopic Ventral Hernia Repair Laparoscopic hernia repair is a technique to fix tears or openings in the abdominal wall using small incisions, laparoscopes (small telescopes inserted into the abdomen) and a patch (screen or mesh) to reinforce the abdominal wall. It may offer a quicker return to work and normal activities with decreased pain for some patients. WHAT IS A VENTRAL HERNIA?

What are the different types of hernias?
Epigastric, umbilical, incisional, lumbar, internal, and Spigelian hernias all occur at different sites over the abdomen in areas that are prone to anatomical or structural weakness. With the exception of internal hernias (within the abdomen), these hernias are commonly recognized as a lump or swelling and are often associated with pain or discomfort at the site. Internal hernias can be extremely difficult to diagnose until the intestine (bowel) has become trapped and obstructed because there is usually no external evidence of a lump.
