Inguinal hernia
What is an inguinal hernia?
An inguinal hernia occurs when the bowel slides through an open canal into a pouch in the groin called the hernial sac. This appears as a lump in the child's groin. Sometimes the lump goes down into the scrotum in a boy or into the labium in a girl. Inguinal hernias are common in childhood, especially in boys. Inguinal hernias in children are not caused by muscle weakness. They are not caused by letting your baby cry, although they are more noticeable when your baby is upset. These hernias do not go away on their own. Very young children need an operation as soon as a hernia appears because if the bowel gets caught in the hernia, it can be damaged. Operation is not so urgent in older children.
The operation
Your child comes to hospital on the day of the operation and usually goes home the same day. Very young or premature babies may stay one night after the operation. During the operation, the doctors stitch the open canal, remove the hernial sac inside and close the opening in the groin. This is done under general anaesthetic. The stitches are beneath the skin and dissolve by themselves. There will be a scar in the groin skin crease. As the child grows, the scar will fade but never completely disappear.
What about activity after the operation?

Umbilical Hernia Causes
When a woman is pregnant the umbilical cord will travel through a small opening that is in the baby’s abdominal muscles. This opening should be closed before the mother gives birth to them. However, if by chance the muscles are not able to come together completely then a weak area will form in the abdominal wall. This is able to cause the umbilical hernia when they are born or later in their life. Read the rest... Written by admin on August 24th, 2009 with 3 comments

Strangulated Hernia
When people have a hernia they will try to force the contents inside of the mass back into the area where it came from. This is referred to as a reducible hernia and is one of the easiest types to have. This allows people to maintain the uncomfortable feeling that the mass causes and to keep it pushed in through different methods.

GENERAL

An incisional hernia is a hernia which develops at the site of a previous operation. This occurs because for some reason the tissues have not healed to their original strength. The weakened tissue now bulges. With this kind of hernia intestines inside the hernia do not often become strangulated.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
- There is a bulge in the area of a previous incision. It may be small or very large.
- The hernia may ache especially with coughing.
TREATMENT
- These hernias can be treated conservatively with a girdle or similar garment.
- Many patients wish to have a hernia repaired because they consider it unsightly or uncomfortable.
- Your doctor has decided to do a surgical repair.
PRE-OPERATIVE - Make sure your doctor is aware of medicines you take, especially medicines which may affect blood clotting. - Your doctor may advise you first of all to deal with factors which jeopardise proper healing after repair. Obesity, prostate trouble, chronic coughing or constipation are the most important.

Hernia
What Is It?
A hernia is a condition that occurs when an internal body part bulges out beyond its normal boundary. With a hernia of the intestine, the thin lining of the abdominal cavity will form a sac that bulges through a weak area of the layer surrounding the abdominal muscles. Hernias appear as bulges in various areas including the groin, thigh, and belly button. Many people can develop hernias after surgery. Hernias of the groin are more common among men, and hernias of the thigh are more common among women. The thin lining of the cavity gives way to the portions of intestine or abdominal fatty tissue to bulge out of the abdominal wall.
Types
  • Femoral hernias develop below the junction between the thigh and torso. Women are more commonly affected than men. Umbilical hernias occur among infants when the abdominal wall is unable to properly close before the baby is born. The belly button can protrude with the hernia, and the infant can grow up with a permanent bulge. Umbilical hernia symptoms are sometimes present in adults. Surgery is frequently required for umbilical hernia repair. Incisional hernia : An incision during abdominal surgery can weaken the abdominal wall enough to allow a hernia at the site. Incisional hernia repair is possible through surgery.

HERNIA (Lat. hernia, perhaps from Gr. g pvos, a sprout), in surgery , the protrusion of a viscus, or part of a viscus, from its normal cavity; thus, hernia cerebri is a protrusion of brainsubstance, hernia pulmonum, a protrusion of a portion of lung , and hernia iridis, a protrusion of some of the iris through an aperture in the cornea. But, used by itself, hernia implies a protrusion from the abdominal cavity, or, in common language, a "rupture." A rupture may occur at any weak point in the abdominal wall. The common situations are the groin inguinal hernia ), the upper part of the thigh ( femoral hernia ), and the navel umbilical hernia). The more movable the viscus the greater the liability to protrusion, and therefore one commonly finds some of the small intestine , or of the fatty apron (omentum) in the hernia. The
