Oral herpes , an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus, is estimated to be present in 50 to 80 percent of the American adult population. Genital herpes , also caused by the herpes simplex virus, is estimated to be present in 20 percent, over 50 million people, and the majority of these cases may be unaware they even have it. Studies show that more than 500,000 Americans are diagnosed with genital herpes each year, and the largest increase is occurring in young teens . Genital herpes is an STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). Although, most genital herpes is caused by type 2 (HSV-2). There is no cure for herpes to date. Supporting your immune system should be your first goal. A weakened immune system is more prone to outbreaks. Efforts to develop a herpes vaccine by biotechnology companies are ongoing. Until an effective herpes vaccine or cure for HSV infection is found, the prevailing approach to treatment continues to be suppressive antiviral therapy. Herpes
What is Herpes? Herpes is the colloquial term for the generally non-lethal infection caused by the herpes simplex virus. The virus has two separate manifestations; Type 1 (labial herpes) and Types 2 (genital herpes). Labial herpes typically exist around the mouth. This is the virus which causes common cold sores and mouth blisters. Genital herpes generally exists on the genitals. It is important to note that labial herpes can be transmitted to the genitals and vice versa. This section concentrates on the symptoms, causes and treatments for genital herpes. What are the symptoms of Herpes? From two to twenty days after exposure to the virus, one begins to see the first signs of infection. The first signals which indicate that one may have herpes include burning and itching of the genitals. This is quickly followed by the emergence of blisters. The blisters begin as a group of tiny, red, painful spots which will develop into yellowish blisters which burst. What remains is a collection of ulcers which are painful to touch but will heal in about 10 days. While the blisters are active, it is common to suffer from a fever, loss of appetite and/or swelling in the genital area. Herpes Symptoms And Women Women's experience with herpes is distinctly different from that of men. Due to the different genital structures, women have a larger area (the vulva) which may become infected. Consequently, women may experience more pain than men when urinating. Furthermore, the virus can often be carried into the vagina to infect the cervix. If this occurs, your physician may ask you to have a Pap test done. This is done to protect you because the incidence of cervical cancer is higher in the presence of herpes. Pregnant women should inform their physician immediately.

Treatment of herpes simplex virus infections in pediatric patients: current status and future needs.
James SH, Whitley RJ Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Pediatrics , University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama, USA. Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) are members of the Herpesviridae family and are characterized by their ability to establish latency after primary infection and subsequently reactivate. HSV infections in the neonatal and pediatric populations range from uncomplicated mucocutaneous diseases to severe, life-threatening infections involving the central nervous system (CNS). The antiviral agent acyclovir has significantly improved treatment outcomes of HSV infections, including the frequency of mucocutaneous recurrences and mortality associated with CNS and disseminated infections. Herpes Vaccine Not Effective in Women
Despite showing early promise, results from a Phase III clinical trial found an experimental herpes vaccine doesn’t prevent genital disease in women.
Keep reading . . . The Herpevac Trial for Women More data on the Herpevac for Women trial is slated to be discussed at the October meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and some experts caution the current results should be regarded as preliminary until more details are reported. Edward M. Hook, III, M.D., director of the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, said this news won’t deter scientists working on HSV vaccines: "This research involved [thousands of] participants and, as analyses progress, the study will provide a wealth of data on events around the acquisition of herpes infections. Further, it is important to realize that while all of the investigators had hoped that the vaccine would be successful, investigators will continue to work on efforts to prevent HSV infections through vaccination and the topic remains a priority of the National Institutes of Health." Herpetic stomatitis
Herpetic stomatitis is a viral infection of the mouth that causes ulcers and inflammation. These mouth ulcers are not the same as canker sores, which are caused by a different virus.
Causes
Herpetic stomatitis is a contagious viral illness caused by Herpes virus hominis (also herpes simplex virus, HSV). It is seen mainly in young children. This condition is probably a child's first exposure to the herpes virus. An adult member of the family may have a cold sore at the time the child develops herpetic stomatitis. More likely, no source for the infection will be discovered.
Symptoms
  • Blisters in the mouth, often on the tongue or cheeks Decrease in food intake, even if the patient is hungry Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) Drooling Fever (often as high as 104 °Fahrenheit) may occur 1 - 2 days before blisters and ulcers appear Irritability Pain in mouth Swollen gums Ulcers in the mouth, often on the tongue or cheeks these form after the blisters pop

Herpes zoster/shingles resources for patients/public
Herpes zoster, more commonly known as shingles, is caused by reactivation of the varicella zoster virus (VZV), which remains in the body indefinitely, usually following the illness of chickenpox. The virus reactivates when a person's immune system is damaged, either by illnesses such as AIDS or treatments such as steroids or chemotherapy for cancer. Shingles causes an intensely painful rash, usually affecting one or more dermatomes (the area of skin supplied by a particular spinal nerve root). Antiviral treatments significantly reduce the pain, duration and complications of shingles.
