You can get it from having sex, even oral sex. The virus can spread even when sores are not present. Mothers can also infect their babies during childbirth. Some people have no symptoms. Others get sores near the area where the virus has entered the body. They turn into blisters, become itchy and painful, and then heal. The virus can be dangerous in newborn babies or in people with weak immune systems. Most people have outbreaks several times a year. Over time, you get them less often. Medicines to help your body fight the virus can help lessen symptoms and decrease outbreaks. Correct usage of latex condoms can reduce, but not eliminate, the risk of catching or spreading herpes. Medical Editor: William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR Genital herpes is a common condition affecting around 45 million people in the U.S. The herpes viruses responsible for genital herpes are transmitted through close personal contact such as sexual contact. The symptoms of genital herpes vary among people. Most people infected with HSV have no symptoms or have only mild symptoms, but some develop severe symptoms. When symptoms do occur, the infected person usually develops one or more painful blisters in the anal or genital areas that eventually ulcerate and heal over a period of a few weeks.

Unlike a flu virus that you can get through the air, herpes spreads by direct contact, that is, directly from the site of infection to the site of contact. For example, if you have a cold sore and kiss someone, you can transfer the virus to their mouth. Similarly, if you have active genital herpes and have vaginal or anal intercourse, you can give your partner genital herpes. Finally, if you have a cold sore and put your mouth on your partners genitals (oral sex), you can give your partner genital herpes. When Is Herpes Most Likely To Be Spread?

.com Herpes Facts ... To most people the word "herpes" means genital herpes, a virus that is transmitted through sexual contact. However herpes is in fact a family of viruses that is extremely widespread. Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), varicella-zoster virus, cytomegalovirus, and Epstein-Barr virus and diseases ranging from chicken pox to
mononucleosis are all caused by viruses in this family. It is HSV-2 that most commonly causes genital infections, and HSV-1 that generally causes infections of the lips; however either viruses can be passed from one location to the other.
The diseases caused by the herpes virus may differ from one another, but they share a few common traits:

Transmission
To infect people, the herpes simplex viruses (both HSV-1 and HSV-2) must access the body through broken skin or a mucous membrane such as inside the mouth or on the genital area. Each virus can be carried in bodily fluids (such saliva, semen, fluid in the female genital tract) or in fluid from herpes sores. The risk for infection is highest with direct contact of blisters or sores during an outbreak. Once the virus has contact with the mucosal surfaces or skin wounds, it begins to replicate. The virus is then transported within nerve cells to their roots where it remains inactive (

The STD Genital Herpes Simplex Virus
Genital Herpes is a STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) caused by a virus called Herpes Simplex virus. There are two different types of the Herpes virus, the one that generally targets the mouth (HSV-1) and the one that generally targets the genitals (HSV-2). Herpes Simplex Virus 1 is essentially the cold sores people get on there lips and mouth. Which really shouldn't be considered an STD since it can be contracted in many ways other than sexually. Genital Herpes is an extremely common STD with 1 in 4 women and 1 in 5 men currently infected with the STD in the USA. Herpes outbreaks will show up as one or a group of blisters on the penis and base of the penis, inside and around the vagina, or in and around the anus. The first outbreak is generally the worst, lasting for weeks until the blisters break, release pus, and begin to heal. Future outbreaks tend to lesson in severity and heal at a much faster rate over time. Genital Herpes is contracted and transmitted through sexual contact, which is what makes it a sexually transmitted disease. The blisters don't have to be present in order to spread the virus, making it hard to control because you never know if your sexual partner is carrying the STD. Since 1970 Genital Herpes cases has, as reported from the center of disease control, risen 30% in the USA.

herpesvirus 2; genital herpes; herpes simplex - genital Definition: A sexually-transmitted viral infection that is characterized by repeated episodes of developing an eruption of small and usually painful blisters on the genitals. Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Genital herpes is caused by two viruses belonging to the Herpes virus hominus group and known as herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) and by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). HSV-1 is responsible for approximately 5 to 10% of genital herpes. Both viruses are transmitted by sexual contact. Cross-infection of type 1 and 2 viruses is thought to occur during oral-genital sex. (Note: HSV-1, the virus responsible for common cold sores, can be transmitted through oral secretions during kissing, and by eating and drinking from contaminated utensils.) Initial oral herpes infection usually occurs in childhood and is not classified as a sexually-transmitted disease. Eighty per cent of the adult population is thought to carry HSV-1 and to have acquired it in a non-sexual manner. The overall incidence of genital herpes is thought to be 1 out of 1,000 people.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Anogenital herpesviral infection Classification and external resources
Genital herpes in a female ICD A ICD MeSH Herpes genitalis (or genital herpes ) refers to a genital infection by herpes simplex virus Following the classification HSV into two distinct categories of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in the 1960s, it was established that "HSV-2 was below the waist, HSV-1 was above the waist". Although genital herpes is largely believed to be caused by HSV-2, genital HSV-1 infections are increasing and now exceed 50% in certain populations, and that rule of thumb no longer applies. HSV is believed to be asymptomatic in the majority of cases, thus aiding contagion and hindering containment. When symptomatic, the typical manifestation of a primary HSV-1 or HSV-2 genital infection is clusters of genital sores consisting of inflamed papules and vesicles on the outer surface of the genitals resembling cold sores. These usually appear 4–7 days after sexual exposure to HSV for the first time. Genital HSV-1 infection recurs at rate of about one sixth of that of genital HSV-2.

Genital herpes infection is very common and on the increase in the United States. Nationwide 45 million people aged 12 and older (1 out of 5 of the total adolescent and adult population) are infected with HSV-2. It is more common in women (1 out of 4) than in men (1 out of 5) possibly because male to female transmission is more efficient than female to male transmission. HSV-2 infection is also more common in areas of high socio-economic disadvantage, facing fundamental issues of health such as:
  • access to quality health care poverty living in communities with a high prevalence of STDs illicit drug use
The Herpes Virus HSV-type 1
  • causes fever blisters on the mouth or face (oral herpes)
HSV-type 2
  • typically affects the genital area (genital herpes)

  • be inactive or 'silent' causing no symptoms cause either genital or oral infections cause 'outbreaks' of blisters and ulcers

How is genital herpes spread?
Genital herpes is spread easily. The virus from contact with an infected person can enter your body through a break in your skin or through the skin of your mouth, penis or vagina, urinary tract opening, cervix or anus. Herpes is most easily spread when blisters or sores can be seen on the infected person. But it can be spread at any time, even when the person who has herpes isn’t experiencing any symptoms.
Genital herpes is usually spread from one person to another by having sex, including oral sex. Herpes can also be spread from one place on your body to another, such as from your genitals to your fingers, then to your eyes or to other parts of your body. Herpes can also be spread from a mother to her baby when she gives birth.
