LEARN ABOUT HERPES
What is herpes?
  • Herpes is a common and usually mild recurrent skin condition; most infections are unrecognized and undiagnosed. Herpes is caused by a virus: the herpes simplex virus (HSV). HSV is in a family of viruses called herpesviruses. This family includes Epstein-Barr virus (the cause of mono) and the varicella zoster virus (the cause of chicken pox and shingles). Although there are several viruses in the herpesvirus family, each is a separate virus and different. Having one virus does not mean you will have another. HSV can cause oral herpes (cold sores or fever blisters on the mouth or facial area) as well as genital herpes (similar symptoms in the genital region). There are two types of herpes simplex: herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). The majority of oral herpes cases are caused by HSV-1 and the majority of genital herpes cases are caused by HSV-2; however, type-1 or type-2 can occur in either the genital or oral area.

Genital Herpes
Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) Slideshow Pictures Is it Genital Herpes? Symptoms of an Initial Outbreak Medical Author:
Medical Editor: Jay W. Marks, MD Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted viral infection (STD) that is relatively common worldwide. In the U.S., it is estimated to affect about 45 million people. While the hallmark of this recurring condition is the presence of raised, reddened, and usually painful bumps or blisters in the genital area, the initial outbreak of genital herpes may look and feel different than the later characteristic flare-ups. In a person who has never been exposed to the herpes simplex virus (genital herpes is caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 or HSV-2; and, less commonly, herpes simplex virus type 1 or HSV-1), symptoms (if present) typically develop within two to 12 days, with an average time of four days. The symptoms and appearance of the initial infection (known as the primary infection) vary widely among individuals.

Herpes affects millions of people in the United States. Over time, most people with herpes find ways to cope with the disease. What Is Genital Herpes? Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) . It is spread through close contact, most often during sexual activity. Genital herpes is probably best known for the sores and blisters it causes. These sores can appear around the lips, genitals, or anus. The place where the sores appear is the original site where the virus entered your body. Genital herpes can be spread through direct contact with these sores, but it also can be spread even if you do not see a sore. How Infection Occurs The herpes virus can pass through a break in your skin during vaginal, oral, or anal sex. It can enter the moist membranes of the penis, vagina, urinary opening, cervix, or anus.

Herpes labialis of the lower lip. Note the blisters in a group marked by an arrow. ICD B ICD MeSH Herpes labialis or "orolabial herpes" is an infection of the lip by herpes simplex virus . An outbreak typically causes small blisters or sores on or around the mouth commonly known as cold sores or fever blisters . The sores typically heal within 2–3 weeks, but the herpes virus remains dormant in the facial nerves , following orofacial infection, periodically reactivating (in symptomatic people) to create sores in the same area of the mouth or face at the site of the original infection. 80% of adults in the United States are carriers of the virus that causes cold sores, and more than 50 million adults in the U.S. develop symptomatic episodes every year. Cold sore has a rate of frequency that varies from rare episodes to 12 or more recurrences per year. Most sufferers experience one to three attacks annually. The frequency and severity of outbreaks generally decreases over time. The virus is transmitted from cold sores and also when there are no symptoms, as it can make copies of itself on the skin in the absence of a blister. This phenomenon is called "asymptomatic shedding". 80%–90% of adults under age 50 with HSV-1 caught it from someone close to them.

Genital herpes is a very common infectious disease, but there is a surprising lack of information available about genital herpes, and an equal lack of "heart" in dealing with having genital herpes. A few years back a friend suggested that there was a need for a "Herpes Home Page" based on responses he'd had from several newsgroups. So here it is. There are the usual things here associated with a genital herpes information center, including alternative treatments, but we also want to create a sense of community among people who share a common problem, herpes; to provide support, understanding, a place to exchange feelings about genital herpes and ideas and maybe even a laugh or two... Let us know what you would like to seewe will do research about genital herpes; make links, etc. Feel free to also suggest sites that you may think that others will find interesting or informative.
Please note: The Herpes Home Page does not necessarily endorse the products or claims made by our advertisers or herpes related links, but does encourage you to visit these sites, read what they offer, and caveat emptor. Forum Awareness Research Treatment ... New!

Herpes simplex viruses (HSV) Genital herpes is caused by infection with herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of HSV, HSV-1 and HSV-2, both of which belong to a wider group called Herpesviridae . Another well-known virus in this group is varicella zoster virus, which causes chicken-pox and shingles. In general:
  • HSV-1 is acquired orally, causing cold sores. HSV-2 is acquired during sexual contact and affects the genital area.
Although genital herpes used to almost always be caused by HSV-2 infection, HSV-1 is accounting for an increasing number of cases of genital herpes in developed countries. Only around 10-25 percent of people infected with HSV-2 are aware they have genital herpes. This is because genital herpes will often produce mild symptoms or no symptoms at all (asymptomatic infection). As a result, many cases of genital herpes go undiagnosed and frequently people unknowingly pass the virus on to their sexual partners.
