About cold sores
An independent guide
from the Herpes Viruses Association
Registered charity no. 291657 What is "cold sore virus"?
Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus. There are two types, called type 1 and type 2. Either type can be caught on any part of the body: lips and genitals are the most common places. This leaflet is about facial sores.
On the face, herpes simplex type 1 is more likely to recur than type 2. How can it recur?
Once you have caught this virus, it hides in nearby nerve sheaths and can sometimes reactivate. There are other viruses that also hide and come back later: for example chickenpox/shingles, glandular fever and cytomegalovirus (CMV) but they do not cause cold sores. How did I get my cold sores?
How is it passed on?
Can anyone get cold sores?
How many people get cold sores?
What is a cold sore like?
  • First a small red patch appears A blister or cluster of blisters develops. You may just get a shallow ulcer inside your mouth. The blister bursts, leaving a small raw area. The raw area begins to heal and scab.

Healing Cold Sores, Genital Herpes and Shingles.. ..without drugs?
INTRODUCTION I have developed a Protocol for healing Cold Sores, Fever Blisters, Genital Herpes, Shingles and even Chicken Pox. This formula, which I have called The Herpes Protocol®, so far, boasts a remarkable track record, having been 100% effective, in 100% of the the cases, and with no adverse reaction ever reported. In other words, it has : 1)Consistently, and without exception, succeeded in healing cold sores, rashes and other lesions, shortly after being initiated by the patient; 2)Significantly reduced the symptomatic phase of all types of Herpes infection, in terms of duration and severity; 3)Reversed secondary pathologies, such as Bell's Palsy, that sometimes develop wherever one of the Herpes viruses flares up; and 4)Greatly reduced (in many cases even eliminated) the incidence of relapses, as well as their duration and morbidity. My name is Roberta Maria Atti and I have been working as a Nutritionist/Psychobiologist for about 25 years, in Italy, where I was born and raised, and the USA where I live. Herpes, in all of its manifestations, is the subject of this website.

Welcome to the Herpes Viruses Association (HVA). We are here to help people who have genital herpes simplex (or facial, when we call it 'cold sores') to help themselves. For the related condition, herpes zoster, please go to the Shingles Support Society web site.
If you want to know about the very common (but often feared) herpes simplex virus - the cause of genital herpes - this on-line resource can help you. You can click here for information on the other six herpes viruses (there are eight in all - none of the others cause genital herpes). The HVA can answer any question you may have. For extra support and regular updates, you subscribe on line here. Or you can post in a cheque with the information we require: name, address, leaflets needed. Short answers can be given by email but complex questions might need the help of a telephone helpline volunteer. If this website helps you , please help us with a donation . (We rely on your donations/subscriptions.)
If our helpline has helped you, as well as considering a donation , please also send us an email with feedback about the call: how you rate it out of 10 (with 10 being 'top marks') and if you can recall what date it was then we can identify the helpliner...

Shingles (Herpes Zoster)
Shingles is an infection of a nerve area caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It causes pain and a rash along a band of skin supplied by the affected nerve. Symptoms usually go within 2-4 weeks. Pain sometimes persists after the rash has gone, more commonly in people over the age of 50. Other complications are uncommon. Antiviral medication may be prescribed to limit the severity of the condition.

What is shingles?
Shingles is a painful blistering rash caused by reactivation of varicella, the chickenpox virus. It is correctly known as herpes zoster. Chickenpox or varicella is the primary infection with the virus, Herpes zoster The virus remains in a resting phase in these nerve cells for years before it is reactivated and grows down the nerves to the skin to produce shingles (zoster). This can occur in childhood but is much more common in adults, especially the elderly. Shingles patients are infectious (resulting in chickenpox), both from virus in the lesions and in some instances the nose and throat.

This site also has a superb section on the biochemical properties of hope and optimism THE NATURAL APPROACH Herpes simplex is a virus that causes both cold sores and genital herpes. The main symptom is clusters of infected blisters which most commonly form around the mouth or nose, or on the vulva, vagina and cervix in women and on the penis in men, although other areas of the body can be affected. The herpes simplex virus can be passed on from person to person through physical contact with the blisters. Once there, the virus remains in the nervous system but does not develop into blisters unless you are ill, undernourished, under stress or suffer extremes of temperature. Localised stress such as sunburn or friction can also trigger an outbreak.

Herpes simple (cold sores) is a viral infection of the skin that causes two types of infection:
  • the classical cold sores on the lips and around the mouth genital cold sores, which are spread by sexual contact
This pamphlet will consider cold sores on the face. What are the symptoms? This common infection is known also as 'fever blisters'. The first symptom is itchiness and tingling at the site of the developing infection, usually on the edge of the lips. Blisters soon appear and later burst to become crusted sores. The person usually feels unwell. The infection occurs only occasionally in some people but frequently in others. How does herpes simplex develop? It usually begins in childhood as a mouth infection. The virus then lives in the nerves supplying the skin or eyes, waiting for an opportunity to become active. It may erupt on any area of the body's skin or in the eyes. The following may precipitate eruptions:
  • overexposure to sunlight overexposure to wind colds, influenza and similar infections

Cold sores are a very common illness caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). The disorder is characterised by groups of fluid-filled blisters which appear on red swollen areas of the skin or on the mucous membranes. The areas can be tender and painful. The blisters heal without scarring but have a tendency to recur.

But both types can infect any area of the skin or mucous membranes. Approximately 80 per cent of the adult population have antibodies against HSV-1 in their blood. Around 25 per cent of the adult population have antibodies against HSV-2.
