The field of High Energy and Nuclear Physics (HENP) will soon be acquiring more experimental data, and with it more chances to observe new phenomena and make new discoveries. DOE projects nearing completion are the BaBar detector at the SLAC B-Factory, new experiments at Brookhaven Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC), upgraded experiments at the Fermilab Tevetron, and at Jefferson Lab . These experiments, as well as U.S. participation in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, have the opportunity to increase knowledge of the physical world in unprecedented ways, through unprecedented amounts of data. The volume of data, however, absolutely demands new computer science tools for data management at scales previously unheard of. The Strategic Simulation Initiative (SSI) will provide the cross cutting computational infrastructure to propel science to new levels and scientists in HENP can help given their background in data management.

First proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider After more than one year of repairs, the LHC is now back on track to create high-energy proton-proton collisions that may yield extraordinary insights into the nature of the physical universe. The first LHC collisions are taking place at the relatively low energy of 900 GeV. Over the next few months the LHC beam energies will be raised, aiming for collisions at the world-record energy of 7 TeV in early 2010. With these high-energy collisions, the hunt for discoveries at the LHC will begin.

Physics and astronomy explores the behavior and structure of matter and energy at all levels to help describe our world and the universe. Physics has been helped us contemplate the origins of the universe and develop new products and technologies that meet human needs. The fundamental laws of physics find application in almost every branch of science, engineering and technology. The Department has active research programs in Astronomy/Astrophysics, Condensed Matter Physics, High-energy Physics, and Nuclear Physics. Our high-energy physics, particle astrophysics and nuclear physics groups are involved in experiments which recreate the conditions of the early universe and help explain how it has evolved. In providing instruction in classical and modern physics, we cover such areas as mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, introductory modern physics, and quantum mechanics.

Title: The Future of High Energy Nuclear Physics in Europe
Authors: J. Schukraft (Submitted on 14 Feb 2006) Abstract: In less than two years from now, the LHC at CERN will start operating with protons and later with heavy ions in the multi TeV energy range. With its unique physics potential and a strong, state-of-the complement of detectors, the LHC will provide the European, and in fact worldwide Nuclear Physics community, with a forefront facility to study nuclear matter under extreme conditions well into the next decade. Comments: Invited talk at the 'D. A. Bromley Memorial Symposium', Yale University, USA, 8-9 December 2005; to be published in the proceedings; 6 pages, 4 figures Subjects: Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex) Cite as: arXiv:nucl-ex/0602014v1

Automatic Buer Tuning and Improved Security for High-Energy Nuclear Ph... Edit Automatic Buer Tuning and Improved Security for High-Energy Nuclear Physics Data Transfers (DRAFT #3) Wu-chun Feng Mark K. Gardner Roger Leslie A. Cottrell ... Andrew B. Hanushevsky Transferring scientic data is one of the most important functions performed by DOE networks. Recently, as much as 76% of the trac on the Abilene network was found to support data transfers. In order to improve network performance in support of the DOE scientic mission, we propose to add support for the dynamic right-sizing of TCP send and receive buers to bbcp and bbftp, two applications widely used in the high-energy nuclear physics community. While we are at it, we will investigate adding authentication and authorization certicate support to improve the security of data transfers. The DRS algorithm was designed to automatically and continuously adapt TCP buer sizes to deliver high performance for scientic applications without requiring tedious hand tuning. The kernel implementation of DRS has been shown to improve transfer rates by a decimal order of magnitude over untuned TCP. However, the kernel implementation requires recompiling the
