Animals of Indian Mythology Dr. Krishnanand Kamat Excerpted from The Quarterly Journal of the Mythic Society Vol. LXXXV Issue 2, June 1994.
First published as "Attitude of our ancestors towards animals" Last updated : June 15,2010 A ncient Indians had recognized the animals' right to co-exist with man and therefore they were loved, nurtured and even worshipped. In order to impress upon the commoners about their importance, the animals were given the status of gods and goddesses. They declared that Almighty incarnates in different animal forms. The kings and the emperors opted different animals in their emblems. Many festivals were/are observed in honor of several animals. In order to inculcate love for animals among children, animals were made heroes in stories. The rulers gave them prime position in art and architecture. Unfortunately, today we are neither adopting ancient Indians' compassionate attitude, nor scientific approach of the westerners towards these animals and hence we are heading towards a catastrophe. The activities of ancient Indians were woven around the animals. Therefore, they knew the happenings of animal world as much as today's ardent student of zoology. This vast knowledge has been recorded in the scriptures of the time. The

Mythology
Assignment: 1
Question: Describe the creation myth of any traditional ethnicity or culture
of your choice, ancient or modern. How, according to this culture,
Cosmic myths are concerned with the world and how it is ordered. They seek to explain the origin of the world, universal catastrophes and natural disasters such as fire or floods, as well as the afterlife. Nearly all mythologies have stories about creation. This type of story is technically known as cosmogony, meaning “birth of the world.” (T Lansford, 2006) These Creation stories also include myths of how human beings first came into existence and how death and suffering entered human experience. In my assignment, I have chosen to describe the creation myth of Hinduism as I am a Hindu myself. I shall begin by creating a clear understanding of Hinduism thereafter proceeding on to discuss the various creation myths of this culture as well as its many religious beliefs. Finally, I will conclude my essay.

The Rigveda is generally believed to be the oldest of all the four Vedas. The Rishi Yaska applauds the Moon for its ability to reflect the sunlight as seen from the Earth ( Nirukta 2.6), a fact duly reiterated by the Rishi Gotama, son of Rishi Rahugana ( Rigveda 1.84.15). In those days, the Full Moon was referred to as Raka and the New Moon as Sinivali ( Sayana Bhasya , and Rigveda 2.33.8). The cause of the eclipses is ascribed to a demon, called Svarbhanu, striking the Sun with darkness. When the gods could not discern the Sun (hidden as it was by darkness), they invoked Rishi Atri who repelled its darkness by chanting four Rik mantras ( Rigveda 5.40.5-6) Before he could chant the four Riks, which must have taken at least 50 seconds, Atri must have had to be informed by his disciples or his sons about the sudden darkness that fell upon the Earth; in which case, the actual process must have lasted a few minutesthe typical duration of a total solar eclipse. In the ninth Rik of the same

Home Library Asian Mythology Hindu (see Hinduism ) mythology is a network of intermingling connecting threads, which, if it could be perfectly understood, would provide a clear narrative map to the rich tapestry that is Hindu thought. As in the case of the medieval cathedral, the decorations of the given Hindu temple confront the viewer as a mysterious mythic story in which everything has philosophical or religious significance. The postures of the figures depicted, the objects held by them, the way they relate to each other all have specific meanings. So it is with Hindu mythology as passed down orally and as written in the great epics and religious texts. No story is told for its own sake; every myth has meaning in relation to other myths and to the Vedic (see Vedic entries) tradition that is its ultimate source. This overall source is dominated by the idea of cosmic sacrifice and related human rituals, by a universe and individuals that are repeatedly sacrificed so that they might be reborn. As Hinduism developed over the centuries from the period of the Aryan (see Aryans ) invasions (c. 1500

Bibliography This box: edit Hindu mythology is a term used largely by western scholarship for a large body of Indian literature that details the lives and times of legendary personalities, deities and divine incarnations on earth interspersed with often large sections of philosophical and ethical discourse. Despite connotations of fiction in common usage, the term myth , in theological and academic studies, does not necessarily imply that a narrative is untrue. Its continued usage however reveals a colonial perspective and a western prejudice against non-Judeo-Christian-Islamic religious literature. Thus, the use of the term mythology is a western construct applied primarily to non-Judeo-Christian-Islamic religious literature.

Jagannatha's collection of poems is entitled 'Ganga-Lahiri', or The Waves of Ganga. In his verses, the poet addresses the river as a mother, comforter, and supporter. A typical hymn runs as follows: I come to you as a child to his mother.
I come as an orphan to you, moist with love.
I come without refuge to you, giver of sacred rest.
I come a fallen man to you, uplifter of all.

His abduction of Sītā and eventual defeat by her husband Rāma are the central incidents of the popular epic the Rāmāyaṇa Sri Lanka , from which he had expelled his brother Kubera. The Rām Līlā festival, an annual pageant popular particularly in northern India, is climaxed with the defeat of Rāvaṇa and the burning of huge effigies of the demons. Rāvaṇa is described as having 10 heads and 20 arms and is vividly portrayed in Rājasthānī painting of incidents of the Rāmāyaṇa , flying away with Sītā, fighting with Rāma, and sitting with his demon councillors. In sculpture, a favourite incident depicted is his shaking of Mount Kailāsa.

To these books of their scripture they attach the greatest sanctity, and state that Brahma himself composed them at the creation.
