Hinduism, known as Sanātana Dharma, ) and Vaidika-Dharma by most Hindus, is a worldwide religious tradition rooted in Indian culture and based on teachings of the Vedas . Hinduism is the third largest religion, with a following of approximately one billion people, encompassing many diverse beliefs and schools. The scholarly estimates of Hinduism's origin vary from 3102 B.C.E. to 1300 B.C.E. , although Hindu estimates are considerably longer, given that they see the religion as expressing timeless truths. Ninety-eight percent of Hinduism's practitioners can be found on the Indian subcontinent , chiefly in Bharat India Some Hindus dislike the name “Hinduism,” although many now use the term. It is an English term, probably first used in the 1829 Oxford English Dictionary and derived from the Persian language for the people who lived beyond the Indus River. It has been argued that Hinduism as described in many textbooks and as taught at universities results from the work of the theosophist, Annie Besant (1847 – 1933), who designed a syllabus for teaching the

Introduction
Hinduism is the religion of the Hindus. It is the oldest of all living religions. Hinduism is not a man-made religion. It was not founded by any single person. It is not based on a set of dogmas preached by a particular set of teachers. It was not started as a system, like Islam or Christianity. It is the product of the seers of the Vedas. It was developed from age to age by the teachings of Avataras, Rishis, Vedas, the Upanishads, the Gita and the Itihasas. It will exist as long as the world lasts. There is a peculiar, mysterious spiritual force that is ingrained in the heart of every Hindu. Hinduism is also known by the names Sanatana Dharma and Vaidika Dharma. Sanatana Dharma means eternal religion, the Ancient Law. Vaidika Dharma means the religion of the Vedas. The Vedas are the foundational scriptures of Hinduism.
A Religion of Freedom
Hinduism allows absolute freedom to the rational mind of man. Hinduism never demands any undue restraint upon the freedom of human reason, the freedom of thought, feeling and will of man.

    Origins
Although the term Hindu dates from the Mughul (Muslim) period in India of 1200 CE, and Hinduism from only the 19th-20th Centuries during English colonial rule, the religious traditions of Hinduism are over 5000 years old. There is no prophet or founder of the Hindu religion. The history of Hinduism is intimately entwined with the complex history of India (the word hindu comes from the Persian name for the river Indus). Hinduism incorporates an extraordinarily diverse range of beliefs and practices which aim to deliver salvation ( moksha ) to its devotees.
    History and Spread
From around 3000 BCE, an Indus Valley civilisation worshipped a form of feminine divinity and an ascetic God named Siva. New traditions blended with these when pastoral nomads, called Aryans, migrated to north-west India sometime between 1000-2000 BCE. Part of the Aryan cultural repertory were sacred hymns known as the Rig Veda. Over time these were absorbed and expanded until the Vedas constituted an enormous corpus of oral knowledge which both appeased and celebrated the gods. The Aryans also had a system of cosmic and social order which placed priests, the
