It is performed by examining a thin slice (section) of tissue under a light microscope or electron microscope . The ability to visualize or differentially identify microscopic structures is frequently enhanced through the use of histological stains. 10. Histology - Definition
histology is the microscopic study of tissues —their formation, structure and function. Related biosciences include cytology and cell biology, which are at a level below tissues
Histology - Definition
Histology is the microscopic study of tissues cytology and cell biology , which are at a level below tissues, studying cells anatomy , which is at a level above tissues, studying organs ; and morphology , which studies entire organisms. The art of histology involves the selection of the stain that will best highlight the feature of interest. Many modern stains are based on the use of an antibody to the chemical of interest. In the 19th Century, histology was an academic discipline in its own right. The 1906 Nobel prize in medicine was awarded to two histologists, Camilo Golgi and Santiogo Ramon y Cajal. They had dueling interpretations of the neural structure of the brain based in differing interpretations of the same images. Contents showTocToggle("show","hide") 1 Histological Artifacts

Histological Artifacts
An artifact in this context refers to a structure or feature of the sample under study that is introduced by the manipulation required to prepare or stain it (1). There are many types of artifacts that can occur, and troubleshooting and minimizing artifacts is a major part of the discipline. Following is a listing of certain common artifacts and brief statements about each.
  • metachromasia : When dyes are used in previously described procedures, there is an expectation that certain structures will appear with predictable colors. The simple existence of coloration with a dye or the particular shade achieved contributes to the identification of structures. Metachromasia refers to the production of unexpected or distorted hues (1).

Ideal for students, instructors, multimedia centers and distance learning, these teaching materials contain four major elements: I. The Visual Histology DVD Series; II. Streaming Videos available by Institutional Site Licenses; III. The Classic Histology PowerPoint Series; and IV. The Visual Histology Text-atlas.

The Histology Series contains 26 half-hour-long educational video programs, each on its own DVD. Each video dedicated to a specific subject in Histology is energetically described by Dr. Dave Moran during a step-by-step guided tour through the fascinating world of microscopic anatomy. Beautiful light microscopic images, photographed with Zeiss optics, are paired with elegant electron microscopic images to make understanding complex structures seem simple. A practical examination is given at the end of each program for student self-assessment to reinforce learning of key concepts. more...

Images Description Transverse sections of a control mouse heart (A and C) and a heart 14 days after permanent ligation of the left anterior descending artery (B and D).
The anterolateral myocardium is replaced by a thin fibrous scar tissue. Panels C and D show high magnification view of normal and infarcted area of myocardium, respectively. RV, right ventricle; LV, left ventricle; v, blood vessels. Arrows in panel B indicate the borders of the infarcted area.

Our Laboratory, together with the Cell Biology Lab. and the Cytogenetics Lab., make the "Department of Microscopy". The available facilities and equipment allow studies in the fields of light and transmission electron microscopy, including immunocytochemistry, as well as molecular biology techniques (such as PCR and Northern blot). Hardware and software for performing 3D reconstructions form serial images, image analysis and design-based stereology is also available. Cell culture and karyotype analysis is routinely made in the Department.
