There are users following this page. Histology is a branch of anatomy . The term histology literally means "the study of the tissues" of the body, but it has come to mean the study of the structure of the body with microscopes. Tissues , which can be thought of as the components of organs, are anatomical structures composed of cells extracellular matrix , and interstitial fluid . Tissues are precisely defined by the requirement that the tissue be composed of cells that are similar in form and function. Four basic tissue types are recognized: epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous tissues. Each of the basic tissue types has several subtypes. Consequently, it is taught at a comprehensive level and concentrates heavily on human tissues and organ systems. A strong component of this course is tissue structure at the ultrastructural level and how it relates to structure-functional relationships at the light microscopic level. A sizeable collection of color light microscopic images as well as black and white electron microscopic images have been archived and can be accessed by links with this home page.
