Historical Maps
The Archives preserves nearly 1,300 historical maps, which are divided by origin into manuscript or state agency collections. The former includes 19 th Century maps of the Western Territories detailing Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Texas, and the Oklahoma and Indian Territories. They cover such subjects as Indian nations, tribes and reservations, the pony express, military forts, ceded lands, and cattle trails. Later maps show the location of oil storage batteries and oil leases, mineral resources, timber and coal lands. These maps provide the researcher with a visual perspective on such topics as railroad routes, school sites, political boundaries, the highway system, oil pipelines, and water resources. Historical maps can illuminate as well as illustrate the historical landscape. Used in conjunction with other records, manuscripts, publications, photographs, audio tapes and video tapes, these maps are a valuable piece in the historical puzzle [

Pacific Ocean Park (1958-1967)
Revised April 6, 1998
In 1956 CBS and the Los Angeles Turf Club (Santa Anita) acquired the lease on the Ocean Park Pier and they proposed to build a $10,000,000 nautical theme park to compete with Disneyland. They closed the pier after Labor Day, hired the best amusement park designers and Hollywood special effects experts and began to design innovative new attractions for the theme park. More than 80 special effects men, scenic designers and artists worked for more than a year on the project.
They like Disney, found corporate sponsors to share the expenses of some of the exhibits. To save money they renovated existing buildings and incorporated six of the old attractions into the layout; the roller coaster merry-go-round, Toonerville Fun House, Glass House, twin diving bells, and Strat-o-liner ride. They called the new park Pacific Ocean Park.
The 28 acre park was decorated throughout in a sea-green and white art moderne look. Its entrance set amidst fountains, sculptures and large sea horse and clam shell decorated frieze, set the mood for the wonders within. The ticket booth in Neptune's Courtyard was set under a six legged concrete starfish canopy. Plastic bubbles and sea horses adorned its top. All day admission was ninety cents for adults; less for children. This included access to the park, Neptune's Kingdom, the Sea Circus and the Westinghouse Enchanted Forest exhibit. Other rides and attractions were at additional costs.

These maps make excellent gifts. Show them in your home, office or lobby they are a conversation starter and will peak the curiosity of anyone. .......Ever wonder what your town, neighborhood or street looked like in the 1800's or in the early 20th century? Covering areas from Java to Palestine, North America, the United States including individual States and Cities, Africa, Asia, Connecticut, Europe, Massachusetts, New York, New York City, Topographical Maps ............ Map making probably begins by using a stick to carve directions into the ground to the best hunting areas. Evidence suggests that the map making evolved independently in many separate parts of earth. Early Eskimos carved ivory coastal maps. Incas built relief maps of stone and clay. The Chinese used maps as early as 7th century B.C. The earliest direct evidence of mapping comes from the middle east where ancient clay tablets show the earth as a flat circular disk. Now while we don't have anything quite as eclectic as this we do have a fine collection of antiquarian and historical maps. Browse our increasingly fine collection of Antiquarian Maps both of local, national, and world interest along with a fine assortment of unusual prints and various related historical ephemera.
