She is out to make sure that students at West Junior High School in Swissvale learn from the school's observance of Black History Month. As librarian at the school, Plutto has organized monthlong activities to educate students about the important contributions of African-Americans. Across the region, Black History Month has been woven into the fabric of school curriculum. "Students need to get an appreciation and understanding of different people," Plutto said. "There are so many African-Americans that have not been included in the curriculum." In her 30 years with the Woodland Hills School District, Plutto has seen the role of African-American history grow in curriculum.
