Names, Typical Names for Kohanim Topic: Genealogy, Mormon Family History Libraries (tm) Benjamin Horowitz of Australia writes: Is it permissible to go to the Mormon reading rooms in order to research my Jewish family roots? Dear Benjamin, A few introductory words about the issue. The Mormons have the largest collection of genealogical data that exists. It is stored in a structure that is built into a mountain in Salt Lake City, Utah, and contains information on over two billion people. This material is also made available via reading rooms located in cities around the world. The motivation for gathering this material is that if they have the name of the person, and the place and date of his death, they can baptize him via proxy. This means that they will have someone stand in for the deceased and go through a baptism in his name. The deceased is then given an opportunity to convert in Heaven (according to their belief.) Therefore, is it forbidden to approach the Mormons for the purpose of benefiting from something that is a vehicle for conversion to their faith?

Home Forum Announcements ... Wallpaper Welcome to the Lions faction website. This site is intended to provide relevant in character (IC) and out of character (OOC) information regarding the faction and its forthcoming events, as well as some generic background information for prospective new players. The faction's secure online booking system for its sanctioned events is at bookings.lionsfaction.co.uk . If you need more information about the faction, or are interested in joining us at an event, please follow the link to our forum and sign up. The Gathering is a live action roleplaying (LRP) system in the UK run by the Lorien Trust (LT). The four main events attract hundreds (or in the case of the August bank holiday set piece, the Gathering, thousands) of players with hugely different costumes, backgrounds, races and attitudes. The Lions faction also typically runs two smaller events each year, catering for around 100 players. The LT system is set in the game world of Erdreja, a high fantasy world whose cultures can be approximately mapped onto various regions of historical earth. The Lions faction is one of ten player "factions" currently active within the system. Each faction can generally be seen as drawing its background from one or more historical civilisations - in the case of the Lions, this was originally heavily Arthurian. More recently the faction has planted its roots in Roman and Greek influences, though there is no pressure on new players, characters or groups to rigidly exist within this genre. A guidebook for new players has been produced.

Joseph Fulton put together this amazing tribute to the 29 men who died in the shipwreck of November 10, 1975 aboard the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior. It's set to The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot, and the video is one of the best I've ever seen on YouTube. I hope you can watch it. Freshwater Fury: The Great Storm of 1913
Wikipedia says that the Great Lakes Storm of 1913, also known as the "Freshwater Fury" or the "White Hurricane", was a blizzard with hurricane-force winds that ravaged the Great Lakes November 7-10, 1913. With the sinking of 19 ships, the stranding of another 19 and a death toll of at least 250, it remains the deadliest and most destructive natural disaster in Great Lakes history. Library
Welcome to Canterbury Cathedral Library. Books can be said to have played an important role in the life of the Cathedral since the time of St. Augustine. Since the Reformation, a series of donations have formed the core of the holdings now in the Cathedral Library. The Library contains about 30,000 books and pamphlets printed before 1900, and an expanding collection of some 20,000 books and serials published in the 20th and 21st centuries. It is particularly rich in books on church history, older theology, national and local history, travel, natural science, medicine and the anti-slavery movement. The Library welcomes all researchers with interests in our collections. Our holdings are catalogued on the web as part of the University of Kent's online catalogue at http://opac.kent.ac.uk.
