The Florida Historical Society
The Florida Historical Society is the oldest cultural organization in the state, and the only state-wide historical society. Established in St. Augustine in 1856, the FHS was briefly inactive during the Civil War and Reconstruction, but was reestablished in 1902 and incorporated in 1905. The FHS is dedicated to preserving Florida's past through the collection, archival maintenance, and publication of historical documents and other materials relating to the history of Florida and its peoples. The Society operates the FHS Press which publishes a diverse collection of interesting books, maintains the Library of Florida History with its extensive archival collections, and manages the Historic Rossetter House Museum. We publish scholarly research in the critically acclaimed Florida Historical Quarterly and produce Florida Frontiers: The Weekly Radio Magazine of the Florida Historical Society . We present a variety of educational public outreach programs including the Florida History Film Festival and the Discover Florida Lecture Series. The Florida Historical Society Annual Meeting, held in May, features fascinating panel discussions and other special events. Since 1997 the Headquarters of the Society has been located in historic downtown Cocoa Village at the Library of Florida History, and is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

97. History
The history of the library, widely recognized as one of the most beautiful library spaces in North America. Includes a link to a small photo gallery.
http://www.peabodyevents.library.jhu.edu/history.html
The George Peabody Library, formerly the Library of the Peabody Institute of the City of Baltimore, dates from the founding of the Peabody Institute in 1857. In that year, George Peabody, a Massachusetts-born philanthropist, dedicated the Peabody Institute to the citizens of Baltimore in appreciation of their "kindness and hospitality." The Peabody Institute, according to George Peabody's charter, originally comprised a free public library, a lecture series, a conservatory of music and an art collection. The Institute is now a division of The Johns Hopkins University. Reflecting the scholarly interests of the nineteenth century, the library consists of a general reference collection on virtually every subject but music. The library contains more than 300,000 titles most of which date from the eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries. Notable strengths in the collection are archaeology, British art and architecture, British and American history, biography, English and American literature, Romance languages and literature, Greek and Latin classics, history of science, geography, and exploration and travel including a large map collection. The Peabody Library remained part of the Peabody Institute until 1966 when the library collection was transferred to the City of Baltimore and administered as a department of the Enoch Pratt Free Library. The collection was transferred again in 1982, this time to The Johns Hopkins University. The George Peabody Library is now a part of the Special Collections Department of the university's Sheridan Libraries. Maintaining the provisions of Mr. Peabody's original gift, the George Peabody Library is a non-circulating collection open to the general public. The library is located at 17 E. Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore, MD 21202.

Author Talk with Cathryn Prince A Professor, A President and a Meteor: The Birth of American Science Tuesday, November 30th at 7 pm This is a fascinating vignette of Federal Period America when science on this continent was still in its infancy, but was just beginning to make its mark. When a fiery meteor crash in 1807 lit up the dark early-morning sky in Weston, Conneticut, it did more than startle a few farmers in the sleepy village. It sparked the curiosity of Benjamin Stillman, whose rigorous investigation of the incident started a chain of events that eventually brought the once-low standing of American science to sudden international prominence.

Welcome to the Manchester Beethoven Orchestra
The Beethoven Society was founded in 1888 and has met without a break since then. The Society gives classical music concerts in aid of both local and national charities. Concerts in aid of UNICEF, the Rainbow Family Trust, the Motor Neurone Disease Association and Holy Innocents Church Roof Appeal have all been given in the recent past.
We do not purely perform works by Beethoven; rather the name is kept as a tribute to the long and illustrious history of the orchestra. We are a group of musicians dedicated to playing good music, enjoying ourselves, and helping to raise money for charities at the same time. Admission to our concerts is usually free but collections are made for the charity sponsored by each concert.
here We currently have vacancies for string players. If you are interested please contact us either by telephoning our Membership Secretaries, Joan and Rosalind Corser, on Contact Us
powered by FreeFind The Manchester Beethoven Orchestra is a member of the National Federation of Music Societies
