  • Species of the day
Turnagra capensis (South Island or Stephens Island piopio) The South Island piopio of New Zealand was first observed by Europeans during Captain Cook’s second voyage in the 1700s. It soon began to suffer as new predators including cats and ferrets were introduced, and it became extinct in the early 1900s. Much of what we know about Turnagra capensis comes from accounts written in Victorian times, but scientists are still striving to correctly classify the species and its relatives. Find out more.

History is young William Seagrove Smiths tattered Civil War uniform at Smith Plantation. Its a gleaming red and black locomotive called The General at the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History and an authentic 19th century gold stamp mill at the Pine Mountain Gold Museum. History in Atlanta METRO is lively, colorful and, in the case of the dinosaur exhibits at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, of elephantine proportions. History is Margaret Mitchells china at The Road to Tara Museum; the books of Eskine Caldwell; a historical marker on Alpharettas History Walk into yesteryear; a trolley ride to haunted Civil War cemeteries and Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park; historic courthouses turned museums, a Hindu Temple, old buggies, vintage weapons and more.
