History of mathematics
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Page from The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing by Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī The area of study known as the history of mathematics is primarily an investigation into the origin of discoveries in mathematics and, to a lesser extent, an investigation into the mathematical methods and notation of the past. Before the modern age and the worldwide spread of knowledge, written examples of new mathematical developments have come to light only in a few locales. The most ancient mathematical texts available are Plimpton 322 Babylonian mathematics c. 1900 BC), the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus (Egyptian mathematics c. 2000-1800 BC) and the Moscow Mathematical Papyrus Egyptian mathematics c. 1890 BC). All of these texts concern the so-called Pythagorean theorem , which seems to be the most ancient and widespread mathematical development after basic arithmetic and geometry. The Greek and Hellenistic contribution greatly refined the methods (especially through the introduction of deductive reasoning and mathematical rigor in proofs ) and expanded the subject matter of mathematics.

You can help to develop the work , or you can ask for assistance in the project room From Wikipedia's History of Mathematics The word " mathematics " comes from the Greek: μάθημα ( máthema ) which means "science, knowledge, or learning"; μαθηματικός ( mathematikós ) means "fond of learning". Today, the term refers to a specific body of knowledge the deductive study of quantity, structure, space, and change. The area of study known as the history of mathematics is primarily an investigation into the origin of new discoveries in mathematics, to a lesser extent an investigation into the standard mathematical methods and notation of the past. This text will guide you through the history of mathematics, emphasizing mathematics that are believed to have had a significant impact on the modern field of Math. This text is designed to be used in a course supporting general mathematical studies, to provide the student with an appreciation of the struggles and acheivements of historic mathematicians. It is expected that the student has been exposed to introductory mathematics concepts, such as logic, college level algebra, introductory calculus, basic trigonometry, and geometry. Thorough knowledge should not be required, but the student should be able to follow progressions from postulate to theorem.

Every culture on earth has developed some mathematics. In some cases, this mathematics has spread from one culture to another. Now there is one predominant international mathematics, and this mathematics has quite a history. It has roots in ancient Egypt and Babylonia, then grew rapidly in ancient Greece. Mathematics written in ancient Greek was translated into Arabic. About the same time some mathematics of India was translated into Arabic. Later some of this mathematics was translated into Latin and became the mathematics of Western Europe. Over a period of several hundred years, it became the mathematics of the world. There are other places in the world that developed significant mathematics, such as China, southern India, and Japan, and they are interesting to study, but the mathematics of the other regions have not had much influence on current international mathematics. There is, of course, much mathematics being done these and other regions, but it is not the traditional math of the regions, but international mathematics. By far, the most significant development in mathematics was giving it firm logical foundations. This took place in ancient Greece in the centuries preceding Euclid. See

    Course Description
The course will be accessible to anyone with a prior exposure to some calculus. The readings will be in both original sources, e.g., Euclid, Aristotle, Newton, and secondary interpretive sources. The seminar will examine some of the primary sources in detail, so that the seminar participants can gain experience in first-hand close reading of complex technical material in a cooperative and mutually reinforcing environment. A final paper (~ 15 pages) will be required on some mathematical topic (broadly conceived), not necessarily related to one of the main themes in the seminar. For the midterm evaluation, there will be a short take home essay assignment (3-4 pages). Texts and Papers: There will be a course packet of the readings marked (*) available at York Copy. The following text should be purchased for the course and is available at Book Haven:

Due to limitations on numbers at some events it is essential that bookings for meetings be received by the stated deadline: it should not be assumed that extra places will be available either after the deadline or on the day. If in any doubt, contact the organiser of the meeting. The Society has made available a limited fund to subsidise student attendance at BSHM organised or co-organised conferences. Requests for support under this initiative should be made initially to the conference organiser. The Society also maintains a list of other meetings which are not associated with the BSHM, but which may nonetheless be of interest to members. It is composed of representatives of some fifty-five nations, those nations internationally in which the history of mathematics is taught and/or actively researched. The ICHM has the following international aims:
    • to encourage the study of the history of mathematics; and
    • to promote a high level of historically and mathematically sophisticated scholar- ship in the field.
The ICHM works toward these goals first and foremost through its official journal, Historia Mathematica . Founded in 1974 by Kenneth O. May

    18. Classical Time
Explains the importance of concept of time in the history of mathematics, science and measurement.
    http://www-history.mcs.st-andrews.ac.uk/HistTopics/Time_1.html
A history of time: Classical time
20th century time History Topics Index
    Version for printing
Time has played a central role in mathematics from its very beginnings, yet it remains one of the most mysterious aspects of the world in which we live. The beginnings of civilisation on Earth required a knowledge of the seasons, and the mysteries surrounding the length of the year, the length of the day and the length of the month began to be studied. All the world religions gave time a central role, be it in astrology, stories of creation, cyclical world histories, notions of eternity, etc. Philosophers have tried to come to grips with the concept; some have argued that time is a basic property of the universe while others have argued that it is an illusion or a property of the human mind and not of the world. A huge effort has been put into making devices to measure time with ever increasing accuracy from the beginnings of recorded history to the present day. Quantum mechanics and relativity theory in the 20 th century have shown the complexities, and sometime apparent paradoxes, in the notion of time. Yet basic mathematics takes time as understood and develops the calculus around a particle whose position at time
