Students' steps add up to walk around Lake Erie
By KRISTIN CAIN
Capital News Service
Friday, October 28, 2005 LANSING Elementary school students in Three Oaks have been busy walking around Lake Erie this fall. The students have been through Buffalo, New York and Cleveland, Ohio and are scheduled to return home to Three Oaks next week, said physical education teacher Rick Maxon. But the kids haven't really been on an extended field trip. The walk is part of Maxon's plan to get his students to take more than 10,000 steps each day. As the kids walk, they chart their progress on a map in the classroom. Last year, they circled Lake Michigan. Students throughout Michigan are shaping up and trimming down with the Healthy Schools program, an initiative that encourages students to eat healthy foods and participate in physical activity. In line with state and national goals, Healthy Schools programs are looking to overhaul vending machine and cafeteria offerings while creating more opportunities for exercise for K-12 students. In 2004, Michigan's first Surgeon General, Kimberlydawn Wisdom, wrote her "Prescription for a Healthier Michigan," which included statistics that children in the state are among nation's most inactive.

Promoting Eye Health
Charles Bonnet Syndrome Quite often called visual hallucinations, the images can take on all kinds of forms from grid like patterns on plain walls to detailed pictures of people or buildings. A Swiss philosopher called Charles Bonnet first described the condition in the 18 th These hallucinations are often not a sign of mental health issues but due to sight loss in later life. One of the reasons behind them is that the brain no longer receives visual information from the eyes so it either draws on images already stored or conjures up new ones. The experiences seem to happen when the person is just waking or during a quiet moment. The hallucinations can last for a few minutes to a few hours and may possibly occur for up to 18 months but no two people are the same. Unfortunately there is no known cure for Charles Bonnet but some people shut their eyes or get up and do something else in order to distract the brain from the images. If you are overly concerned about them contact your GP or Ophthalmologist or contact us and we may be able to put you in touch with someone who is experiencing something similar.
