Dear Bill, 3 nice specific questions! I'll try to give a 3-part answer. An elaborate scientific hoax? I suppose the honest answer is "how would we know?" There's no reason to suspect so - the discoverers of Flores Man are noted anthropologists and their publication is in the eminent journal Nature , so was subjected to the toughest of peer review. I suppose even today the shadow of Piltdown Man looms large, so maybe in 10, 50, 100 years...but I don't think so. The brain size is interesting - not only is it small in absolute terms (similar to a chimpanzee), but it is small relative to the body size (about 1 metre height). It's very hard to say how these individuals would relate to modern humans in terms of intelligence. For one thing, "intelligence" itself is somewhat difficult to quantitate. For another, it's not clear whether the artefacts such as stone tools found in the area were made by or even used by this species. It's doubtful they were as mentally sophisticated as modern humans, but they may have been as resourceful as modern chimps. There's no reason to suspect from the skeletons that they were deformed or retarded. What they seem to be is a dwarf version of Homo erectus , so comparisons re: intelligence with Homo sapiens are not really valid. Isolation is known to produce dwarf forms of other species, so the logic goes "why not hominids".

Sonnenschein will confer the degrees following his installation as the University's 11th president and the presentation of his inaugural address. A description of the recipients' work follows. IHSAN ABBAS Doctor of Humane Letters Abbas, professor emeritus at the American University of Beirut, is considered the premier figure of this century in the field of Arabic and Islamic studies both in the East and in the West. His work includes the seminal contribution to the founding principles of the modern edited Arabic text and groundbreaking work on the Arabic literary legacy of Muslim Spain. Abbas is also known for his internationally acclaimed theoretical and applied works on Arabic literary criticism and for his translations of works of literature particularly American literature which have set new standards for translation into Arabic. Abbas has written, edited and translated close to 70 books and over 80 articles, displaying a wide range of expertise not only in Arabic literature but also in history, geography, political thought, law, science, civilization and religion. He is currently editor of the Encyclopaedia of Islamic Civilization. His open-minded approach to scholarship is part of his call for cooperation between Arabs, Muslims and Western Orientalists for the uncovering of the humanistic contribution of Islamic civilization to world civilization over the centuries.

Anthropology (pronounced /ænθrɵˈpɒlədʒi/ , from the Greek anthrōpos , "human", and -λογία, -logia , "discourse", first use in English: 1593) is the study of human beings , everywhere and throughout time. Anthropology has its intellectual origins in both the natural sciences , and the humanities . Its basic questions concern, "What defines Homo sapiens ?" "Who are the ancestors of modern Homo sapiens ?" "What are our physical traits?" "How do we behave?" "Why are there variations and differences among different groups of humans?" "How has the evolutionary past of Homo sapiens influenced its social organization and culture?" and so forth. While specific modern anthropologists have a tendency to specialize in technical subfields, their data and ideas are routinely synthesized into larger works about the scope and progress of our species. The term "anthropology" refers in common parlance most often to Cultural Anthropology , the study of the culture, beliefs, and practices of living people. In American universities, however, the department of Anthropology often includes three or four subfields, including cultural anthropology, archaeology biological anthropology and linguistic anthropology . However, in universities in the
